So if the US end was blocked, could they not have gone back to the Mexico side and gotten out? Also, what happens on this side. Do we send them back or will they stay here?

I was thinking the same thing.

San Diego taxpayers footing the bill to rescue drug smugglers.

Because one of them was too fat to get out of the opening. (See #18)

I'm really, really tired of the "kill 'em all" crap that pops up in every thread like this.

Every immigration thread fills up with that kind of crap and this one is no different.

The Rodenator, eh? That kills tunneling rodents. Is that what you're suggesting we do to the human beings in this tunnel? Shame on you!

Come on guys. I know you were just trying to be witty, I know what point you were making, and so does nearly everyone else.

The problem is, that even though we are a small community, and many of us have read each other's posts often enough to know you aren't calling for the murder of people trapped in a tunnel, Free Republic IS a public place where what we say is semi-permanently recorded.

Other people, who would like nothing better than to label places like Free Republic "Hate Speech" and legislate it out of existence, are always on the take looking to discredit us.

We do a pretty good job here, we aren't Democratic Underground, even if we do get pretty caustic.

Rescuers Free People Trapped In Cross-Border Tunnel

POSTED: 7:38 am PDT October 10, 2006
UPDATED: 8:59 am PDT October 10, 2006

SAN DIEGO -- Rescue crews freed several people trapped in a tunnel near the U.S.-Mexico border, NBC 7/39 reported.

Crews from the San Diego Fire Department worked for about 90 minutes to enlarge the exit to the tunnel and pulled at least three people to safety at about 8:45 a.m.

They received a call from Border Patrol officers at about 7:15 a.m. Tuesday, fire department spokesman Maurice Luque said. The officers reported that the people were trapped in the tunnel that surfaces behind an industrial building in the 10000 block of Via de la Amistad in the Otay Mesa area. The officers said the tunnel appeared to run across the border, which is about a quarter of a mile to the south.

Rescuers said the tunnel has not collapsed, but the opening is quite small. They are trying to enlarge the exit and free the people who remain inside, Luque said.

Border Patrol officers apparently had the tunnel exit under surveillance and saw two people exit the tunnel at about 7 a.m., Luque said. They went to arrest the young man and woman, both in their 20s, and discovered that another man had become jammed in the tunnel opening, trapping four others behind him, Luque said.

Rescue crews used jackhammers to enlarge the concrete exit hole, Luque said.

Two or more people where were trapped in the tunnel may have headed back to Mexico, officials said.

The two people who had exited the tunnel were taken into custody by Border Patrol officers, Luque said.

I'm all for allowing them to suffer the full consequences of their criminal behavior. Leave them in the tunnel. If they can extricate themselves on our side of the border, then deport them. If they can make it back to their side, so be it. If neither, oh well...

Political Cowardice crap aside, why should we expend our tax dollars to help a bunch of criminals out of a sticky situation of their own design? Because it's the "nice thing to do"? The "nice thing to do" would have been for them to NOT sneak across our border via an illegal tunnel.

So does this mean we can't even joke any more, for fear of political correctness? This is getting absurd.

But, you see, that isn't how we do things in this country. That's why we have the moral edge over countries that act otherwise.

We have some morals here. We don't execute petty criminals. Crossing the border illegally is a minor offense in our laws. We don't execute people who do that.

We don't leave drunk drivers who cause terrible accidents to die in their cars, either. We extricate them, try to save their lives, then prosecute them under our laws.

We're a moral people in the United States of America. We treat people with compassion...even those who break the laws. I wouldn't have it any other way.

I suggest that those who would leave illegal border crossers to die in a tunnel are not moral people. I suggest that they do not represent the spirit and morality of this great nation.

If you disagree, then perhaps you'll explain further.

"So does this mean we can't even joke any more,"

Of course not. We joke all the time. The problem is that posts in an individual thread stand alone. Nobody necessarily knows you're joking, unless you make sure they do.

The Moderators delete messages that can be understood as advocating violence against people. Why? Because all sorts of people are reading Free Republic, including people who would like very much to see this forum disappear.

Generally, jokes that involve people's deaths aren't all that funny in the first place. And, when readers aren't aware of your wittiness, based on your other posts in other threads, they're even less funny.

It's not political correctness.

How about a rescue, and then 10 years of hard labor in the USA?

You wouldn't have a problem with that, right?
