"Unlike purgatory, which Catholics say is rooted in Scripture,.."

Where?
Also, limbo makes no sense, and arguing about it doesn't either.
If you accept God's saving grace and try your best to follow His commands - you're saved. As for those who have not received God's word, as opposed to those who receive and reject it, the choice is up to God to decide. He made the rules. And ultimately it IS His choice.

Just some of the Scripture that supports the concept of Purgatory:
PURGATORY
Lk 12:58-59; 1 Cor 3:15; Mt 5:25-26 ... temporary agony.
Heb 12:6-11 ... Gods painful discipline.
Mt 12:32 ... no forgiveness ... nor in the age to come.
1 Pet 3:18-20 ... might be purgatory (limbo?).
1 Pet 4:6 ... preached to the dead.
Rev 21:27 ... nothing unclean shall enter heaven.
Heb 12:23 ... souls in heaven are perfect.
Col 1:24; 2 Sam 12:13-14 ... extra suffering.
2 Mac 12:43-46 ... sacrifice for the dead.
2 Tim 1:15-18 ... prayer for Onesiphorus for that Day.
1 Jn 5:14-17 ... mortal/venial sins

A lot of that is covered at this link (I am too lazy to "linkasize" it, so you will need to cut and paste it into your browser window - sorry!!). I am not sure if this article is "all-inclusive" or not, but it certainly covers a lot of material, including Old and New Testament citations. Interesting to note that some non-Catholic chuches also hold the belief. It if you don't agree with the article after having read it, you will at least come away much better informed on the topic!!
