Poll: Most call for Hastert’s resignation
KOBTV ^ | 10/8/08

A poll conducted for Eyewitness News 4 shows that most Americans are calling for Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert to resign in the wake of the Mark Foley page scandal.

Foley resigned from Congress last week after admitting to sending explicit instant messages to underage pages.

SurveyUSA, which serves television stations throughout the country including KOB-TV, asked 1,000 adults whether Hastert should resign as speaker, resign from Congress or stay put.

In all, 43 percent say Hastert should resign from Congress, while another 20 percent want him to resign from his leadership position. 27 percent say he should remain as Speaker of the House. The other 10 percent weren’t sure.

The survey’s margin of error was 3.2 percent.

Meanwhile, a separate poll conducted by Newsweek magazine says 52 percent of Americans believe Hastert was aware of the allegations against Foley and tried to cover them up.

Hastert has said he was not aware of Foley's inappropriate conduct until the story broke publicly late last month.

Wait- 1000 Americans think Hastert should resign and that equates to a majority?

You might have a good idea there. From now on lets have a basic civics test before people can vote.

I see these elections as one verses the other. People are fed up with the repubs. But voting them out doesnt mean some empty vacuum. Something has to replace them. This is a somewhat attempt of an analogy what people will do this Nov(IMO). Lets say you want to go fishing but your waders are a little leaky and old and you do not like them and want to replace them. So you grab another pair and they leak horribly and are cold. if those were the only 2 choices, which would you choose? I still feel the GOP will lose seats but not enough to lose the House or the Senate

Just to clarify thecrow2006's reply:

poll = pole

Now you can turn around and bend over.

43 per cent say resign totally, 27 percent say just quit the leadership position, 20 per cent say stay the course.....and what about the other 13 percent??????

I don't see a majority in those numbers!

"Most" are dolts who lack minds of their own, when it comes to politics.

As usual I was not one of the 1,000 called.

This has not been a good fall for the Democrats with the hurricane season, great economy, gas prices, war on terror legislation initiatives, interest rates all going the wrong way for them. The Republicans need to understand this is a political ploy designed to deflect attention from these other issues. I have real difficulty imagining that voters in local districts are that concerned about what the Northeast media says. However, I can imagine they are concerned about whether the Republicans in Congress are going to show some guts. Hastert and the party did what was reasonable and should now attack and win this election. Mao’s little red book doesn’t contain a whole lot of wisdom, but he does say, “Politics is war without bloodshed, and war is politics with bloodshed.” Every day our soldiers are killed and maimed for this nation. I don’t believe it is too much to expect for these politicians to understand they are in a war and to speak with vigor about issues of substance. We cannot afford to have Democrats in charge of our nation’s security.

This Foley issue is one of deception, with the media reporting instant messages as if they were the emails of a prior time, and implying Hastert should have taken some undefined action related to “feelings” he should have had. If people focus on the substance of the matter, Hastert took the informal action he could at the time. The FBI and the parents saw the same information and could imagine little or nothing they could do. Hastert should attack based on the substance of the matter and the Republicans should back him. Republicans do not do well when they stay in the realm of illusion. Neither should they ever allow the Democrats a victory based on illusion. Hastert needs to fight for this reality because victory for the illusion provides additional substance for the great Democratic illusion that 9/11 was an aberration and not a warning signal for a horrible war to come.

What kind of logic is this? Most Americans don't know who Hastert is so he should resign because some think he is weak? Doesn't make sense to me.<<

Hastert is a weak speaker, and always has been. He was put up as speaker, because he was a kinder and gentler man than his predecessor Newt.

Contract with America resonated with the population, and the Republican voting bloc went with it.

I really can't think of anything Hastert has done as speaker that is memorable.

He's a nice affable guy in a position that requires some ruthlessness. And if Conyers is given a chairmanship, it will be because Hastert really hasn't done much.

Does that explain it better?

My point about the polls is somewhat separate from the Hastert issue. The polls cite an 100% with 10% not sure.

If you put into the questions, "Do you know who Dennis Hastert is?" as a prerequisite for answering anything, at least 30% would answer "never heard of him" or "no", maybe more. Sean Hanity's man on the street is pretty clear, most people are not politically aware.

That's all I mean about the polls. Don't trust them, unless they come clean with their details.

DK

I am somewhat surprised by how sure everyone is here that there is nothing to be concerned about. I believe the possibility that Hastert is hurting the GOP needs to be taken seriously. Rallying to his defense may be serving only to make the party look worse.

'''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''

So rallying to his defense shouldn't be done based on what's right, but on how it makes the party look for November. Yes, let's throw the Speaker under the bus to save a few votes never mind that he's not guilty of anything.

I've been around for awhile, and love FR, and those that make me think, laugh and ponder.

To be succinct, phuck the "MSM" and those of their ilk.

Ah, you mean a push poll, that makes sense then. They tell people the evil Denny Hastert didn't bother to report a pedophile under his charge, should he lose his job, quit congress altogther or should we just hang him?

Dear Survey USA,

Thank you for sending us you latest attempt to keep this old story going for another day. Now that N. Korea has unfortunately gained the ability to blow the hell out of my family and friends, I must inform you that 100% of me could give a flying f*ck what your survey says about anything. And that has a +/- of 0%.

Dobson did reply and he is angry because the Dems are trying to blackmail Evangelicals into not voting at all. He doesn't buy that Dems didn't know about this earlier and held on to it.

The response is somewhere on FR.

When you enter politics, you accept the importance of perception. If he is perceived as a major liability he should step down for the good of the party. I would rather throw him under the bus than the entire party.

I believe that the GOP is in far more trouble than most FReepers who have been commenting are willing to admit.

Who cares?

I agree, the GOP has already pissed into the wind for '06 with all of the crooks, corruption, and child molesters. I'm concentrating on '08.
