BRUSSELS -- Plans for a Muslim-only hospital in the Netherlands have sparked a heated debate over its separate all-male and all-female wings, halal food and roster of duty imams.
A populist nationalist party described the plan for the clinic in south Rotterdam as "a step backwards to the Middle Ages."
The sexes will be segregated, with male patients treated by an exclusively male nursing and medical staff and similar arrangements for female patients.
The Netherlands' once proud multicultural model, which promoted tolerance of a rapidly growing immigrant population, has been questioned in recent years, especially after the slaying of filmmaker Theo van Gogh by an Islamist.
The latest dispute concerns plans for a private hospital aimed at the Netherlands' 1 million Muslims.
It is the brainchild of a health industry entrepreneur, Paul Sturkenboom, who plans to employ 45 doctors and 275 nurses. Staff will not have to be Muslims.
The plan has been attacked by the Rotterdam-based Leefbaar Rotterdam, or "Liveable Rotterdam" party, which controlled the local council until March.
Last month, the party unsuccessfully tried to have the hospital banned.
A nationalist member of parliament, Geert Wilders, has dubbed the hospital plan "apartheid."
Construction work is about to start, and the clinic aims to open by 2008.
Mr. Sturkenboom defended his project.
"If Mr. Wilders is saying in a xenophobic way that this will prohibit integration of Muslim Dutch citizens, we just point to the fact that 20 or 30 years ago, Jewish, Roman Catholic and Protestant Dutch people had their own schools, their own hospitals, their own trade unions and employers' organizations" he said.
"That autonomy helped those people integrate at their own speed into Dutch society. This compact hospital will give Muslims time to integrate..."

Why do we continue to call it "tolerance"?
"Tolerance - noun:
willingness to accept behavior and beliefs which are different from your own, although you might not agree with or approve of them."
These groups demand tolerance - but ONLY for themselves. For example: We have a national holiday coming up soon. It's called "Christmas." (Except we're not supposed to call it CHRISTMAS anymore. someone might get offended. No matter that many more of us - here in our own country - will be offended that we're not supposed to see or hear anything that says "Christmas" or - (gasp) Baby Jesus.
Tolerance is not a one sided action...What we have is major intolerance.
People immigrate to another country, refuse to assimilate and then demand the natives of that country suppress their own customs, so they wont be 'offended' while they - the intruders - set up their own customs.
That is not "tolerance"
If it is a private facility, and if they will not refuse emergency treatment when needed to anyone, I guess maybe I don't have a problme with it. In fact, I suppose they should treat anyone, but you'd have to go along with their segregation and food laws, etc.
In fact I had my daughter at Beth Israel hospital in NYC. I had some hopes the food might be OK, since I knew it would be Kosher. After one meal I realized - this is like the food you must get in Israeli prisons!
This is just Holland deciding to commit suicide. I have little sympathy for them.
Muslims don't want to integrate. They've made that perfectly clear.
And then you have the idiots like the guy who posted on another board who lives there and says that if only the Dutch weren't so racist and gave the Muslims more money and jobs, there wouldn't be any problems. Some folks are truly clueless.
I've read that in various EUropean countries the garbage creatures are in the habit of spitting at the nurses and ignoring the bathrooms in favor of urinating and defecating on floors like the subhuman animals they are, and have even physically attacked nurses : All because of their belief that all women who have jobs and don't wear hefty bags are whores, who are to be treated with contempt and even violence. At least if this hospital is stocked with moslem nurses or male nurses, that nonsense-to which no HUMAN female should be subjected-will end or at least be greatly reduced. I don't like seeing garbage creatures who should be deported given ANY concessions-but at least there is that silver lining.
Because THAT would make sense.

Yet, until the muzzies start complaining that they don't want to be "touched" by infidels. Then the non-muslims will be fired. I'd say, Christian staff, but knowing what I do about the Netherlands, the pews are empty.
Animals have limited intelligence and act mostly on instinct. Unlike members of the human race, they are not moral agents; they are better than the Islamist slime who desecrate these hospitals. Please don't insult animals by using the term to describe these sub-humans.
