It's hard to believe this petite, well-mannered Texan - sitting opposite in a Sydney harbourside hotel - caused the kind of stir the music industry has not seen since John Lennon sang about being crucified in 1969.
It's the day before the band's first Australian concert on their Accidents and Accusations world tour.
Maines looks younger than her 31 years.

Aware she may sound "bizarre", the 31-year-old believes the vitriol directed at The Dixie Chicks was part of a right-wing conspiracy.
An organised group known as the Free Republic set out to bring the band down.
The organisation's power, she says, comes through the internet. The site has thousands of subscribers, all of whom were encouraged to destroy the band's music and boycott the radio stations that played it.
"It's scary how much power they do have," she says. "They can take down someone singlehandedly and I don't think Americans are aware of that.
"It's the same group that went after (former US president) Bill Clinton and (gay actress) Ellen DeGeneres."
In the beginning, Maines says, they tried to fight their detractors. Their management tried to alert radio station programmers to what was happening.
"But they weren't open to it and just thought we were grasping at straws to try and salvage something," she says.
"It was just bigger than we could fight and we weren't willing to put ourselves out there to be made to look stupid if people weren't willing to investigate this thing and be open to it."

"For the Free Republic we were a dream come true; they made it their mission to take us down. Apparently we were not supposed to think like this because we play country music."

I missed the memo telling me what to do (as if!). I did not miss the news articles reporting the hateful things these women said and keep saying.
I was suspicious when I saw Emily Robison's husband when he opened for Robert Earl Green. Every song seemed to be about holding a gun to a woman's head. I had a fever that night, but I think I would have heckled him anyway.
Then, the Chicks began making political statements. I love music and have enjoyed theirs in the past. But, as the saying goes, they need to just "shut up and sing."
GREAT...THANKS.
We're organized?
lololololol...........
Well,Teddy comes to mind, and then there's Jimmah.Never mind, both these guys are soon to be recalled by their maker.
LOL!
FOFLOL!
SHE IS SO STUPID...STUPID...STUPID!
Chaos theory..organised chaos..making sense of the sublime and inane.
In her little mind we are. It's easier for her to say we're an organized conspiracy out to get her than it is to say she messed up so bad she no longer has fans.
Natalie for the safety of those around you and yourself, please seek professional help.
Don't feel bad! I think they are adorable and very interesting. There is a meerkat named Yossarian on the Animal Planet show called Meerkat Manor. He has a few social problems-lol
Meerkat is a documentary/soap opera type show. It shows a troop of meerkats on their day to day activities and trials and tribilations.
Ted's waaayy overdue. (And I don't mean in heaven. Hey Ted! You don't have to worry about having to face Mary Jo Kopechne; she's in heaven. So don't sweat it.)
As for Natalie, I work in radio and I've been a member of FR since 1998 and had no idea there were organized FR meetings to discuss which musicians we were going to get banned from the radio next (I vote for Ashlee Simpson!) I've enjoyed reading the reaction to Natalie's idiocy on FR, but personally, I crossed them off my list the minute I read the news reports of their attacks on the commander-in-chief on foreign soil as our troops were about to go into battle, which used to be called "giving aid and comfort to the enemy," or as my late father would've put it, "treason." And they've just compounded the stupidity ever since with their endless, whining victim routine.
How did they think their patriotic Southern and Middle-American fans were going to react to them (to cite just a few instances beyond the Bush-bashing) appearing nude on Entertainment Weekly's cover with self-pitying slogans written on their naked bodies; giving interviews in London in which Natalie sneered that she doesn't understand why anybody cares about patriotism; and declaring that their own fans are scary, redneck morons and they wouldn't want to be listened to by anyone who'd put them in a CD changer with Toby Keith and Reba McEntire? And according to a review I read, the fawning new documentary about them actually shows Natalie (to the trepidation of her bandmates) stupidly refusing to let their label ship the new CD to country stations that were actually willing to play it because she was mad at country radio and far above those horrid people; and refusing to play smaller venues for a guaranteed fee, instead insisting on big arenas they could no longer sell out, a boneheaded move that cost the group millions. No, Nat, if you want to see the source of all your problems, as painful as it might be, try looking into a mirror.
BTW, a friend of mine who is a very prominent Texas musician has worked with Nat's dad, one of the top pedal steel players around. He tells me Natalie was always a spoiled brat with no respect for anyone else, and he can't see that anything's changed since she was a teenager.
When did we attack Ellen DeGeneras?
That's amazing! She gets it, and she doesn't even know it!!!

FReepers are only one person at each keyboard, fed up with all the idiots, yelling at the TV and the radio, that we are not going to take it anymore.
What worries her, is that there are a lot of us.
