New Book Says Religious Right is Wrong About Christian Values (Jesus would have been a democrat)
FoxNews.com ^ | Monday, October 02, 2006 | By Martin Frost

During my 26 years in Congress, I made a practice of attending services at a different black church each Sunday I was back in my Congressional District in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area.

Unlike many politicians, I stayed for the entire service including the sermon.

Some of the preachers were quite inspiring; others were very ordinary.

As a practicing member of the Jewish faith, I don’t pretend to be an authority on the New Testament. My late wife, Kathy, a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church in Latta, S.C., accompanied me to most of these services during our eights years of marriage and we would often discuss the minister’s message after the service. She knew her New Testament.

Kathy would often point out to me that a careful reading of the New Testament made it clear to her that Jesus would have been a Democrat had he been alive today. After all, he preached about helping the poor and the peaceful resolution of disputes. In her view, Jesus had little in common with the current day religious right with its preoccupation with abortion, gay rights and stem cell research.

And now along comes a wonderful new book by former Congressman Bob Edgar, which makes much the same point in great detail with ample citations to scripture. His book, “Middle Church – Reclaiming the Moral Values of the Faithful Majority from the Religious Right,” is a must read for all people of faith.

Might have leaned toward some democratic ideals, but not as the corrupt Democrat Party is today and has been for dozens of years.

Jesus is a royalist. Whether he'd be a Republican or a Democrat is therefore a moot question.

...only this time he wouldn't use it on money changers in the temple.

My thoughts exactly. I see it looking like something from "Mars Attacks".

I doubt Jesus would be a democrat. To be a member of a party that supports a group of psychos that fly planes into buildings, not to mention a party that calls a sexual predator and rapist "The greatest President of all time" would be the furthest thing from his mind.

Yeah, Jesus was in favor of abortion, gay marriage, and appeasing evil.

WOULD JESUS WEAR A ROLEX
(Margaret Archer / Chet Atkins)

Ray Stevens - 1987

"Woke up this mornin' turned on my TV set
There in livin' color was somethin' I can't forget
This man was preachin' at me.. yeah.. layin' on the charm
Asking me for 20 with 10,000 on his arm

"He wore designer clothing and a big smile on his face
Selling me salvation while they sang Amazing Grace
Asking me for money when he had all the signs of weath
Almost wrote a check out.. yeah.. but then I asked myself…

"Would He wear a pinky ring, would He drive a fancy car
Would His wife wear furs and diamonds, would His dressing room have a star
If he came back tomorrow there's something I'd like to know
Would Jesus wear a rolex on His television show

"Would Jesus be political if he came back to earth
Have his second home in Palm Springs.. yeah.. but try to hide his worth
Take money from those poor folks when He comes back again
And admit He's talked to all those preachers who said they'd been-a talking to Him

"Would He wear a pinky ring, would He drive a fancy car
Would His wife wear furs and diamonds, would His dressing room have a star
If he came back tomorrow there's something I'd like to know
Could ya tell me - Would Jesus wear a rolex
Would Jesus wear a rolex
Would Jesus wear a rolex on His television show
Would Jesus wear a rolex on His television show"

Watch what you say ... Our President has on more than one occasion claimed to be doing God's bidding. You wouldn't qualify him as such would you?

Be more precise ... another jackass democratic politician.

I don`t know what party Jesus would choose, but it would be interesting to see him run against Hellary in 2008. I wonder what those debates would be like...."Begone Satan, the power of myself compels you."

It is ignorantly rediculous to say that Jesus would be of any party, much less a Democrat. Since Jesus was considered a Rabbi in those days, he also preached rendering "to Ceaser the things that were Caeser's and to God the things that were God's". He advocated, for example, that we (as individuals) care for the poor and never preached taking money from our neighbors to satisfy our own personal responsibility to care for the poor.
Other Democratic platforms, ie, abortion, same sex marriage, pedophilia, etc. is, in fact, condemned by Jesus.

As such an authority on the New Testament, and as a "lifelong" Christian, then she is aware of the New Testament admonition to be ye not yoked unequally with unbelievers (non-Christians). Can't think of any closer yoke than in a marriage. - Jesus wasn't political then, and He still wouldn't be political IMO. He stated that His kingdom was not of this world. - Killing babies that He had a hand in creating probably wouldn't be likely to appeal to him. Some Democrat butts might get the lash taken to them is one mind photo that springs up in my cerebral cortex (or somewhere in my brain).

It seems to me that government programs to help the poor actually make people feel that they can leave that up to others and produce a society less caring about the needs of others. I certainly have not seen any Democrats understand that helping Iraqis who lived on $10/mo might be more urgent than raising the minimum wage, for instance for people earning 80X that,

Someone told me that when everyone has their hand out it is hard to find someone to give a hand up.

God certainly wouldn't support socialism after throwing us out of the garden to fend for ourselves. Life takes some effort and if you love this gift of life God gave you you will embrace the struggles and take care of yourself, your family, and then others.

Attention Mr. "practicing member of the Jewish faith:" He IS alive today.

I agree Jesus might have been a Democrat; a late 50s very early 60s Democrat :)

Would Jesus vote?

Good question.

When asked about the hated Roman tax on the Jews, "Is it lawful to pay tribute unto Caesar?", Jesus said simply "Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and unto God the things that are God's." So we are not to use our Christianity to evade other governmental obligations, such as paying taxes.

But, I say to myself, my vote is mine so I'll do with it as I want.

Yet it was provided unto me by the providence of God. So I vote. I tend to believe it is a Christian duty.

And I think Jesus would vote if the vote were provided to him. But that's strictly my opinion.
