I didn't hear anything about the IMs until after Foley had announced his resignation. None of that hit the news until later in the day. That's a very important point, if only to illustrate the difference between how Republicans and Democrats deal with this kind of story. Foley resigned from Congress before most of us even knew why he resigned.
