Mexico Criticizes Plan for Border Fence

MEXICO CITY — Mexico sent a diplomatic note to the U.S. government on Monday saying a plan to build hundreds of miles of fencing on their common border would damage relations.

President-elect Felipe Calderon urged U.S. officials to reconsider the plan, saying one "could stop more migrants with a kilometer of new roads and development (in Mexico) than with a wall."

In the letter to the U.S. State Department, Mexico's Foreign Relations Department said only comprehensive reform could stem the tide of illegal immigrants heading north in search of work.

"The diplomatic note explains that the construction of this barrier will hurt the relations between the two countries and that it is not the solution to strengthen security on the border," the department said.

President Vicente Fox, who leaves office Dec. 1, has spent his six-year term lobbying for a new guest worker program and an amnesty for the millions of Mexicans working illegally in the United States — proposals that have been supported by President Bush.

You gotta love it! The guy has gall saying our government would do better building roads in Mexico to help their economy rather than build a wall at the border! What is Mexico doing to curb the tide of emigration? What are THEY doing about the continued flow of drugs from and through Mexico northward? What are THEY doing to improve the livelihood of their own people? Answer is clear... invade the US, populate, and propogate with the US picking up the tab and making sure Mexico benefits with millions of American pesos sent back "home" monthly.

What do you expect from an elitist government that for years has depended on us to rid them of their poor?

It makes sense to build the fence another six feet higher.

This is really getting OLD. Mexico has NO right to tell us what will and will not happen on our border. If this wall won't work, then why would they even worry about it. BECAUSE IT WILL...

NAFTA has nothing to do with this fence. NAFTA should be using roads and rails, not desert areas.

Mexico is a corrupt nation from top to bottom and if they don't watch their actions...we might play cowboys and mexicans AGAIN.

So they only way to stem the tide of illegal immigrants is to make them all legal. Poof! Problem solved.

The 700 mile fence is a good start, but not nearly sufficient.

So now the question is will our government start shaking in their boots over this threat and scrap the wall? I'm all for building a one way road to our southern border.

Hey Felipe....that's your mission pal. With Mexico's oil and tourist $$ its a shame that your citizens illegaly cross into the US for goodies. I'm sure the Guatemalan's dont have easy access to Mexico's southern border. Hypocrite. Keep your nose out of US policy and take care of your own citizens Senor Presidente Nuevo.

Yep, there'll be a revived need for shrubbers and landscapers south of the border fence.

I'll believe they believe this when they start building roads in Guatemala and Honduras.

I'll believe they believe our economic success is due to our open border when they open their borders to Central Americans. If cheap labor is the source of our prosperity, they are the source of that cheap labor, with cheaper labor yet available off their southern border, so in theory they should be doing great.

In seriousness, Mexico is an extremely wealthy country in terms of its resources and potential. They should be a net importer of labor, they shouldn't be exporting 700,000 people per year every year.

Illegals should be prohibited from sending money out of the country. And whatever business allows them to do so should be severely sanctioned.

What is Mexico doing to curb the tide of emigration? What are THEY doing about the continued flow of drugs from and through Mexico northward? What are THEY doing to improve the livelihood of their own people? Answer is clear

To answer your questions:

1. Mexico is doing nothing to curb the tide of illegals coming to this country. In fact they openly encourage it, print out travel brochures, etc.

2. They are indeed doing something about the continued flow of drugs. Mexico supports the drug smugglers in many ways, including giving them law enforcement and military assistance to make sure they can get the drugs through the border more efficiently.

3. They are working on improving the livelihood of their people by encouraging them to go to the US. This not only improves the lives of the ones that go to the US to work, and get on social programs; it is twofold in helping the Mexican citizens that stay in Mexico. The rich in Mexico are helped to stay that way by not having to deal with their own poor; and many of the illegals send money back to Mexico, which helps their economy.

Oh wait...maybe you meant what is Mexico doing in it's own country to STOP illegal immigration and illegals drugs from coming to the US and improve the situation for their own poor...let me think..., nope nothing comes to mind.

The Mexican govenment doesn't take responsibility for anything. It's hardly a government. It's more like a propaganda mill modeled on the democrat party in the United States.

Here are the U.S. answers for the Mexican President:

"President-elect Felipe Calderon urged U.S. officials to reconsider the plan, saying one "could stop more migrants with a kilometer of new roads and development (in Mexico) than with a wall."

If that's a solution, then why doesn't Mexico do that, what are they waiting for, international welfare?

In the letter to the U.S. State Department, Mexico's Foreign Relations Department said only comprehensive reform could stem the tide of illegal immigrants heading north in search of work."

The problem is not a "Foreign Relations" problem. The place where "comprehensive reform" is needed is inside Mexico, with its financial, business regulation and tax policies. Until Mexico makes such "comprehensive reforms", its people will continue "heading north" to escape the poverty and corruption imposed on the populace by the policies of their government. Until Mexico makes such "comprehensive reforms", letting its migrants illegally come here simply makes the United States an enabler of the failures of the Mexican government.

"The diplomatic note explains that the construction of this barrier will hurt the relations between the two countries and that it is not the solution to strengthen security on the border," the department said.

Relations between the United States and Mexico are already severely damaged by the illegal presumptions of the Mexican government that it and its people have the right to officially, openly and flagrantly flaunt United States immigration laws. Until that attitude of the Mexican government changes, relations with the United States cannot improve.

The border cannot be manned across the entire length all day everyday. Fences help because a large portion of would-be illegal entrants will focus their border-crossing efforts to unfenced sections, which also allows more focused attention of border security guards on the remaining unfenced areas. The fencing on the border will enhance security by limiting the number and length of locations on the border where there is absolutley no security

"Fox has called the barrier "shameful" and compared it to the Berlin Wall."

Fox's analogy about the Berlin was is incorrect. The Berlin wall was not built by the West German government to keep East Germans out of West Germany. It was built by the East German dictatorship to keep its people in. Mr. Fox and his successor are trying to tranfer Mexico's fanancial problems to the United States, by invading the United States with its unwanted workers, instead of solving Mexico's problems in Mexico.

Now, Americans, where in the ^&%$#@ is a U.S. President who will speak these truths!!!!!!
