WASHINGTON (AP) -- Former Rep. Mark Foley, under FBI investigation for e-mail exchanges with teenage congressional pages, has checked himself into rehabilitation facility for alcoholism treatment and accepts responsibility for his actions, his attorney acknowledged Monday.
The attorney, David Roth, would not identify the facility, but told the Associated Press in West Palm Beach, Fla., that Foley had checked in over the weekend.
"I strongly believe that I am an alcoholic and have accepted the need for immediate treatment for alcoholism and other behavioral problems," Foley said in a statement, Roth told the AP.
Foley, a Republican, abruptly quit Congress on Friday after reports surfaced that he'd sent sexually charged electronic messages to boys working as pages. In the statement, Foley said the "events that led to my resignation have crystalized recognition of my long-standing and significant alcoholism and emotional difficulties."
"I deeply regret and accept full responsibility for the harm I have caused," Foley said. He also expressed "gratitude for the prayers and words of encouragement that have been conveyed to me."
The FBI, meanwhile, "is conducting an assessment to see if there's been a violation of federal law," according to FBI spokesman Richard Kolko.
White House press secretary Tony Snow, asked about that Monday on ABC's "Good Morning America," urged greater efforts to "figure out what happened here." He called it "a terrible story" and said he considered it unfortunate that "people are thinking, 'OK, can I get political advantage out of this'."

A Republican staff member warned congressional pages five years ago to watch out for Congressman Mark Foley, according to a former page.
Matthew Loraditch, a page in the 2001-2002 class, told ABC News he and other pages were warned about Foley by a supervisor in the House Clerk's office.
Loraditch, the president of the Page Alumni Association, said the pages were told "don't get too wrapped up in him being too nice to you and all that kind of stuff."
Captain's Quarters is a very good blog. I just think this time he is wrong, and mixed up the emails and IMs.
I know there are a lot of rumors etc but I would be shocked if Folwy wasn't involved in a lot more than emails and IM's and I would be shocked if Hastert was ignorant of what was going on
Add that to the fact the republicans never told the democrats on the Page Board raises a real question in my mind.
Look, I am a Christian Conservative and I know this will likely cause the GOP to lose control of the House but I would like SOMEONE in power to be honest . Just once

House Majority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) told The Washington Post last night that he had learned this spring of some "contact" between Foley and a 16-year-old page. Boehner said he told House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.), and that Hastert assured him "we're taking care of it."
UPDATE: I was reading a last-night version of that piece. It now says:
"House Majority Leader John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) told The Washington Post last night that he had learned this spring of inappropriate "contact" between Foley and a 16-year-old page. Boehner said he then told House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.). Boehner later contacted The Post and said he could not remember whether he talked to Hastert."

People with aberrant sexual behavior leave nothing but misery in their wake. It's foolish to turn a blind eye to them.
Those offended by the hypocrisy of the whole thing are wasting their breath. The Democrats absolutely can sink a Republican for something their own people are blatantly guilty of themselves and they have in the past - Bob Packwood, for example, Henry Hyde, Newt Gingrich, the list is a long and depressing one. Here the significant thing is the ability to keep the scandal on the front pages, not what the scandal consists of. It is here that the media make one of their biggest contributions to Democratic partisanism, all the while pretending piously that it's just the news.

Seriously, folks may be covering up, or folks may just be fuzzy about what got said and when.
Sometimes I have to reconstruct conversations that my staff have had with clients that are only weeks ago, or maybe a couple of months ago. It isn't a very straightforward process.

The bottom line is that Speaker Hastert may not have thought anything illegal had occurred. It appears that the age of consent in DC is 16 years old. If the activities were confined to Washington, DC, I'm not sure that anything illegal happened.
Other than giving Mr. Foley a warning not to mess with the help, and having the House page committee look into it, Mr. Hastert may not have thought there was much else he could do.

Interestingly, it appears that it violates no law for an adult to engage in actual physical sexual acts with a 16 year old in Washington, DC, however, federal law prohibits talking about these things with someone under the age of 18 over the Internet.
So, if Mr. Foley had just taken these young men to the local hotel, he'd be in the clear, legally. However, talking about stuff over the Internet with them appears to be a felony.
That's kinda bizarre.
