Weekly Piracy Report
24-31 October 2006

The following is a summary of the daily reports broadcast by the IMB's Piracy Reporting Centre to ships in Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Ocean Regions on the SafetyNET service of Inmarsat-C from 24 to 31 October 2006.

ALERT

Chittagong anchorage, Bangladesh
Forty incidents have been reported since 28.01.2006. Pirates are targeting ships preparing to anchor. Ships are advised to take extra precautions.

Recently reported incidents

25.10.2006 at 0515 LT at Dar es Salaam anchorage, Tanzania.
Robbers boarded a chemical tanker via anchor chain. They stole ship's stores and escaped. Master’s attempt to contact port control was futile.

18.10.2006 at 1400 LT off Ticala, San Pablo, Samboanga del Sur, southern Mindanoa, Philippines.
Armed pirates attacked a group of fishing vessels engaged in fishing. Four fishermen were killed in the shootout.

13.10.2006 at 0400 LT in posn: 10:28.7N - 064:08.5W, Navimca, Cumana, Venezuela.
Robbers boarded a yacht at anchor and stole two outboard engines

Authorities still have not said what exploded, but Durzy said he'd been told it was a device of some kind.

``Whatever caused it was pretty strong,'' San Jose Fire Capt. Jose Guerrero said.

Authorities received multiple reports of a smoke detector alarm sounding at 7:34 p.m., Guerrero said, followed a few minutes later by multiple calls of an explosion.

When crews arrived, they found a 6-by-7-foot window had been shattered near a first-floor exit between the network operations center and a nearby building at 2161 N. First St. The window's frame was bent and a light haze covered the area, Guerrero said. No flames, however, were visible, nor was there any other damage. Other debris was in the area, said Guerrero, who couldn't say Tuesday night exactly what the debris was...
