A fugitive gunman accused of killing a Florida sheriff’s deputy was shot 68 times by SWAT team officers who found him hiding in the woods, according to autopsy results.

Police fired 110 shots at Angilo Freeland, 27, the target of a massive manhunt in central Florida following the shooting death of Polk County Sheriff’s Deputy Matt Williams Thursday.

“That’s all the bullets we had, or we would have shot him more,” Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd told the Orlando Sentinel newspaper.

"I do have full-moonclips and half-moonclips"

An easy way to tell an "ammo clip" from a "magazine" is that a magazine contains a spring and or a follower that actually feeds the ammo. A clip does not. My Italian Carcano and M1 Garand use clips which leave the weapon when the last round is fired. My AR15 uses a "detachable" magazine. I have military ammo in .223 and M1 carbine that comes loaded into "stripper clips" for quickly charging magazines. My Mauser K98 and Russian SKS also use stripper clips to quickly load the rifle's non-removable magazine. All of these SWAT guys were using AR or HK type carbines with twenty to thirty-two round detachable magazines. I doubt that they all actually emptied their magazines at this perp.

Thank you for alerting me to the required Monday morning arm chair quaterback analysis. Since I wasn't there I can say with utmost certainty that at least 32 shots were fired into existing pre-ventilated areas of the suspects body...8>)

Further, one continues to shoot until one is sure the threat is no longer a threat. If that takes 12+/- shots per Officer in a matter of seconds so be it.

From one particular experience, there was a guy who was shot at approx 6 feet by two officers who emptied their Glock 17 mags into this guy before he dropped his gun and went down. Of course this was due to his shooting at one of the officers but he was a walking dead man until the head shot

We need to give those cops more time at the pistol range so they get to be better shots.

Is the scumbag dead or not?

I can't believe the responses on this thread. Is this a Bizarro FR?

Good morning.
"There always needs to be an investigation... in a case like this, it should only take a second or two..."

Both statements are absolutely true.

I may get flamed but 68 times is just ridiculous and shows an aspect of these SWAT teams that are dangerous. No reason whatsoever to take out ones anger on a dead body.

...you've never been in a firefight or nearly stepped on somebody with a gun hoping to kill you or your best friend ...

I'll relate a little game that we played in order to show you what stress fire is.... we did it with bb guns... you should use the new paint balls.. same thing..

have two guys stand 3 feet from you one's gun is loaded and ready the other had nothing... you have a paint ball gun.

just to really get your attention have the "bad guy" pop you 3-4 times so it really hurts... then with everybody drawn, guns out barrel down you get to "choose" which one to draw down and disarm..the dummy gun holder can cough, twitch whatever... If you shoot the wrong one or shoot the wrong one you get shot in the chest with the BB or paint-ball... If you choose the right guy 3 times you rotate out of the "cop" position. It really makes you pay attention to the trigger finger and end of the barrel

I'll bet you that they just fired and kept firing till the "threat" stopped..happens in slow motion but maybe 10ths of a second.... they were scared, jacked up on adrenalin and pissed that one of their friends was murdered...

this is meant only sarcastically... would you feel better if he only had 40 holes...or 20 holes....

I've seen guys with their guts hanging out of their back going for their weapon....

At least the LEOs got a "good" kill and didn't whack some innocent civilian in a "no-knock" drug search....

humorous alliteration of Does it say, let 'er rip, empty the clip? too literally in a failed and misguided attempt to gainsay the actual point that I was making

This sounded too much like a liberal chant to be left alone.

which is that the officers' behavior needs to be evaluated in the context of LEO department policies governing the use of deadly force.

There will be an investigation with or without my input.

The police are reinforcing a message out to criminals there is a special penalty for killing police: it's certain suicide.

So an officer's life is worth more than a plain old citizen. Interesting take.

My all time favorite "trigger happy" cop footage is of the cops in Southern California (Compton?) standing in a circle blasting away at a bad guy in an evil SUV from a few yards away, fortunately not hitting each other or any civilians, but only wounding the guy they were shooting at.

yeah.... i remember that firefight...it was scary.. everybody shooting a target in the middle and in a circle....bwaahahaha.. scary... that's almost as funny as planting a claymore backwards....almost

He did kill a police dog.

They way I figure, the cops still have the edge on dog body count for all the ones they smoke for fun when doing no-knock raids. No sympathy for the dead K-9's owner. Just glad to know they know how it feels to lose a pet.

f you were to catalog all police shootings in the United States over, say, the last ten or twenty years (you probably wouldn't want to look back earlier, because to keep it to an apples-to-apples comparison you would not want to mix the more recent widespread use of semi-automatic weapons by LEOs with the prevailing use of revolvers by LEOs in earlier times), and plot histograms of the total number of rounds fired and rounds that hit the perp(s) in a single incident, the reported 110 shots fired (by LEOs) and 68 hits would almost certainly be a far "outlier" (in the statistical sense) that would and should warrant extra scrutiny.

...before you start trying to do real extensive calculations... well... you better take into account "distance" on this one... they were about to step on him.. 3 feet or 4.... I'll admit to a little "looseness" on my rapid fire....but I'm pretty sure I'll pop at least 60-70% of them at that distance..

But, a perp who is willing to kill an officer of the law would have no problem killing anyone else.

Pretty weak argument. A perp that has killed anyone will have no problem killing anyone else either.

"Why is this even news? Seriously, they should have fired a 1,000 rounds at the scumbag."

Make that a 1,001. An extra shot for moi.

Do I hear an extra shot, someone?

Howdy,

I am sure that with practice I could empty and reload in 4-6 seconds but some of the people on here think that the cops emptied reloaded, emptied reloaded etc until they were out of ammo!

He's very dead, as he should be. The Sherriff stated they fired 110 shots because that was all they had.

This perp was not shot because he killed a cop and a K-9. He was shot because he raised his hand with the gun in it in a threatening manner

True, but if he had killed a little old Korean grocer, there quite likely would not have been 10 officers all in the same spot, ready to shoot him, when the time came. At most there would have two or three. The massive manhunt would not have been put on for an "ordinary" murder, especially in the 'hood, but in the 'burbs as well.

You are on target!

Swat officers are supposed to be able to take out the bad guy with A well-placed shot.

This was a bunch of good ol' boys just as ridiculous as the New York man a few years ago.

IF amn ordinary citizen fired 15 or 50 rounds into a would be robber would the police be applauding or arresting the citizen?

DING! DING! DING! We have a winner!

Nine cops shooting. That's a little more than seven rounds per cop. Seven rounds is less than a one second burst of fire. It sounds like a judicious use of force rather than angry trigger happy cops emptying their magazines.

I am amazed at the comments on this thread. If people complain about this police shooting, then we might as well take the guns away from the cops...

Police take all murders (OK, most) of innocent civilians seriously, and for the most part, do everything they can to solve the crime. I can't believe some FReepers would complain about 'extra' cops volunteering to work to catch a cop killer. When a child goes missing, or you have a family member missing, wouldn't you do everything you can to help find them? Well, cops are 'brothers' they are "family". It's not that they take it more seriously, they just take it personally. I have been there, I do know what I'm talking about.

Cops are not trained to shoot to injure, like what they portray on TV. You can only fire your weapon if it is a shoot to kill situation.

As for shooting accuracy? Cops are trained to shoot for the largest mass, so the chances of hitting the target are increased.I can't speak for all departments, but we were trained to shoot until we were out of bullets! Yes, it's very easy to hit a target (for some) when you are at a shooting range, it's a completely different story to be running, or scared and worried about yourself or one of your partners getting shot.

It is so easy to sit here, after the fact, and criticize everything the cops did or didn't do. Most cops do not want to kill the perp, but some times it is necessary. This case was justified and it was not excessive. When you shoot, you are going to empty your gun. As others have stated on this thread, once someone kills a cop, there is nothing they won't do. It doesn't mean the cops life is more valuable than any one else's, it just means the perp knows he's going to jail for life or he's a dead man.

Justice was served in this case.
