Dispatchers said there was at least one hostage.
The adjoining middle school was also evacuated.
Jan Howard, a secretary to the superintendent of Park County Schools, said the students were being taken to a safe location and only sheriff's deputies and fire officials were being allowed into the schools.
Authorities said U.S. Highway 285 was closed in Bailey because of the situation.
Jefferson County authorities said deputies, including the SWAT team and bomb squad, from their sheriff's office were on stand-by to assist if called by Park County authorities.

Can't imagine what they're going through.
There are ongoing negotiations.
Snipers are being set up and moving into position.
Baily is the northen gateway to South Park. The South Park Valley is the location for South Park the TV comedy show. I know: trivia.
Heard that, as well.
Good thing that the dumbass media is broadcasting live closeups of the SWAT team positions.
The teacher left?
CBS just said they're hearing the shooters... then stopped.
Anyone hear more than one up to now? Maybe he's mistaken.
I've BEEN to Bailey! This school, a gas station, sawmill, a few commercial businesses and the Continental Divide!
KOA radio said they have unconfirmed reports of 3 hostages released leaving 2 with the gunman. Please keep praying.
School buses have been directed to the school area to remove students to a remote location.
The only remote location my kid would be going to was home.
Right. I thought it was me.
CBS saying that they have a visual.
Uh oh, SWAT just moved their operations command vehicle right up in front.
KLA radio said man with gun at the door... a visual.
Perp says they have a bomb.

BREAKING NEWS: Man reportedly fires shot at Platte Canyon High School, U.S. 285 closed
Platte Canyon High School was in lockdown and U.S. 285 was blocked to through traffic on Wednesday after radio dispatch reports starting at about 11:45 a.m. indicated that an adult male had fired a shot in a high school second-floor classroom after a teacher had refused to do what he asked. Jan Howard, assistant to school district superintendent Jim Walpole, stated that the high school, and possibly the middle school, was in lockdown mode, meaning no one could enter or leave the building except for authorized personnel. The dispatcher described a situation in which the male had a "black squarish looking gun and fired one shot when the teacher refused to do what he asked." At 11:50 a.m., the dispatcher said that the teacher had left the room five minutes before, but that students were still in the room with the man. Howard could not confirm whether a shot had been fired. Flume reporter Cate Malek, who was at the scene, could not reach anyone there who could comment on the situation. She confirmed that U.S. 285 is blocked between the administration building and Fitzsimmons Middle School, which are 3.6 miles west of downtown Bailey.
