PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: While his father was in Ireland to watch the losing effort of the U.S. Ryder Cup golf team, President Bush and First Lady Laura Bush attended St. John's Episcopal Church in Washington. They are spending a quiet weekend in the White House.
Chavez continues verbal assault on GWB
In the meantime, Venezuelan president (title used very loosely here and deliberately not initial capped) Hugo Chavez continued his verbal assault on our Dubya. Speaking in Caracas on his return to his home country, this piece of foul human detritus said of President Bush, "He should renounce the presidency if he has any dignity. The President of the United States has failed completely." This, of course, is somewhat comparable to Benito Mussolini calling for FDR's resignation in the late 1930's -- and it should be met with exactly the same derision as would have occurred had Mussolini actually done such a thing 70 years ago.
Chavez administration slanders NYPD
Not content to vilify our President, Chavez and his minions also slandered the New York City Police Department. Chavez accused the NYPD of deliberately cutting off the power supply to disrupt his speech at Harlem's Mount Olivet Baptist Church, when a live transmission of the event by Venezuela's state TV station was interrupted for a few minutes.
"Contrary to his assertions, the New York Police Department did not in any way interfere with efforts to transmit information from New York," Deputy Commissioner Paul J. Browne said in a statement distributed by the U.S. Embassy in Venezuela.
Venezuelan Information Minister Willian Lara had initially accused the CIA of being behind the disruption, but Venezuelan Ambassador Bernardo Alvarez later said New York police officers were responsible.
President Bush to hose Afghan-Pakistani Summit at White House
On to much more significant news: In his Saturday radio address, President Bush said, "Next week, I will host a meeting at the White House with two courageous leaders, President Karzai of Afghanistan and President Musharraf of Pakistan. These two leaders are working to defeat the forces of terrorism and extremism."
Next Wednesday's summit, which comes after GWB met Musharraf on Friday and meets with Karzai on Tuesday, aims to make the neighboring countries "closer allies" in the U.S.-led war on terrorism. Relations between the two countries have been increasingly strained due to Pakistani refusal to control the northern border region between the them, the attempted Taliban resurgence, and related issues.
The leaders were expected to discuss Afghanistan's complaints that Pakistan has not done enough to halt cross-border attacks by members of the Taliban militia ousted from power by US-led forces in late 2001.
In an interview published Saturday in the national Canadian newspaper Globe and Mail, Karzai said that Pakistan, Afghanistan's neighbor, must find the political will to eliminate its breeding grounds of terrorism if Afghanistan is to know peace.
Karzai said the Pakistani military must take action and other countries need to pressure them to do so, the newspaper said.
"We have to talk to Pakistan and we have to convince them that it is not in their interest, that it is going to hurt all of us eventually," he was quoted as saying.
The three leaders were also slated to discuss efforts to capture or kill terrorist chief Osama bin Laden.
THE WEEK AHEAD: The White House did not release the President's schedule for the upcoming week, but the following events have been confirmed through news media sources and yesterday's presidential radio address.
_ Monday, GWB will travel to Cincinnati, Ohio, where he is scheduled to tour a tool company, and attend a private fundraiser for Sen. Mike DeWine, who is in a tight reelection race._ Also on Monday, First Lady Laura Bush is scheduled to make remarks at the President's Global Cultural Initiative, and Vice President Dick Cheney is scheduled to address the Michigan National Guard.
_ Tuesday, the First will be in Granville, Ohio, to raise money for state Sen. Joy Padgett, who is running to replace Rep. Bob Ney (who resigned due to having pled guilty to a felony).
_ Wednesday, Summit with the Afghan and Pakistani presidents.
_ Thursday, the President will discuss energy policy in Hoover, Alabama, before heading to Birmingham for a lunchtime fundraiser with Gov. Bob Riley. Also on Thursday, the President will return to Ohio to headline a fundraiser for Rep. Deborah Pryce. Also on Thursday, the First Lady will attend two fundraisers for Republican Congressional candidates in Iowa. She headlines a luncheon for Jeff Lamberti in Des Moines after attending a morning event on behalf of Mike Whalen, the Republican candidate in Iowa's 1st U.S. House District, which is in Davenport.
The sermon at St. John's?
Hi onyx.
Hi Maj. :)
Hi bitt. :)
ROFLMAO!!! Obviously I didn't catch my typo. But that's OK, because it's a funny one.
You're welcome, my sweet friend. :)
Evenin' everybody, I'm so glad to be able to check in on the Dose tonight. I don't have a lot of time to post here these days (hopefully that is going to change a little, soon) but I always enjoy the pictures.
I am sure you are right, Wolfstar! That is a great photo and a wonderful smile. I hope they got rested up a bit this weekend.
Thank you for posting the Dose!
41 loooks GOOD! Happy and healthy!
I thought I'd watch when I got home from church this morn, but it was all over by then.
It's good to see the team supported by Pres GHWB.
((((Thanks for the sweet added to friend!
Toss the word sweet into my prior post to you!))))
In my heart I am sending prayers of support to our President, EVERY SINGLE DAY.
Something to add to The Week Ahead:
On Saturday, First Lady Laura hosts the 2006 National Book Festival on the National Mall.
Since I didn't get a toaster last night, may I have a 4 slicer tonight? LOL I'd like one with lovely Laura and President Bush.
Thanks.
He sure does. Bless him and Barbara. Cute couple.
My husband just found our dear, dear cat, Cinnamon........18 years old.........underneath his favorite ferns, dead.
We had not seen him all day, so he looked in all the 'usual places' and found him there.
I cannot believe the pain I feel right now. We just talked to all four kids before we knew, and now will have to tell them all, and their hearts will break. He was an outdoor cat and outlived his life expectancy by 6 years, but that doesn't help right now....
Thanks for letting me share this with those who will understand my deep sorrow. We have lost a dear, sweet friend.
FOTFLOL! A four slicer! lysie, you are awesome!
I'm sorry OhioW. We get so attached to our pets, they are truly gifts to us.
Eighteen years is awesome for a cat. Must've been a wise creature...;^)
((((hugs))))
I know how you feel. I lost my dear cat Alexandra (nicknamed "Chunky" because she was so fat) a year and a half ago. She had to be put to sleep due to diabetes and liver failure. She was only 13, and losing her hurt so bad. I've not had a cat since then, but thankfully, I'll be adopting two kittens this Wednesday. Give it some time, and adopt a new kitty or two. They won't replace your Cinnamon, but they will make your world a little brighter.
He must have just fallen asleep.
