Something to think about is that gasoline taxes support the development and sustainment of our nation's highways. If we move to electric cars, we might also need to tax highway travel by the mile to continue to sustain those roads.

You have a point but most studies show that motorists consistently pay out far more in taxes than the actual cost of maintaining the roads. It's easy enough to check- just do a revenue comparison of gas taxes and licence fees against the highway budget. On balance, though, I'm sure most motorists would not object too strenuously to tolls or higher licence fees if they are offset by fuel savings.

In PA the gas tax goes directly into the General Fund, so who knows what it supports. Same for the federal gas tax. There is no real, separate, highway tax fund. Think Social Security for the equivalent.

We all pay taxes on electricity, so the govs will just get their taxes another way.

Which is essentially what they're about to do around Cedar Park.
