[Michigan Gov. Candidate] DeVos says he wants intelligent design taught in science classes
Michigan Live ^ | 20 September 2006 | Kathy Barks Hoffman

Republican gubernatorial candidate Dick DeVos says Michigan's science curriculum should include a discussion about intelligent design.

He says including intelligent design along with evolution would help students discern the facts among different theories.

"I would like to see the ideas of intelligent design — that many scientists are now suggesting is a very viable alternative theory — that that theory and others that would be considered credible would expose our students to more ideas, not less," DeVos told The Associated Press this week during an interview on education.

Intelligent design's proponents hold that living organisms are so complex they must have been created by a higher force rather than evolving from more primitive forms. Some want science teachers to teach that Darwin's theory of evolution is not a fact and has gaps.

However, a federal judge in December barred the school system in Dover, Pa., from teaching intelligent design alongside evolution in high school biology classes. The judge said that intelligent design is religion masquerading as science, and that teaching it alongside evolution violates the separation of church and state. [Kitzmiller et al. v Dover Area School District et al.]

Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm has said that Michigan schools need to teach the established theory of evolution in science classes and not include intelligent design, but can explore intelligent design in a current events or a comparative religions class.

The State Board of Education last week postponed adopting new science curriculum guidelines until state lawmakers get more time to weigh in on what the state's public schools science curriculum should be and how it should approach the teaching of evolution.

You believe in the opening headline written by a Biased Associated Press reporter rather than the actual quotes by Devos in the article, hmmm... that does not make sense.

Students discuss lots of things in schools some relevant and some not so relevant, then why not discussion of ID in the school, again which is not forced by the way and it is up to individual school choice.

You don't have to be a Bible believer to believe in a creator.

Anyway, I came to the right because logic led me here.

Agreed. Why not have class discussions on homosexuality while we're at it. I mean, it's just a discussion, what could it possibly hurt.

"Really. When you get a moment could you send me a verse ?"

Go to an online KJV Bible and type in the word church. You will get approximately 115 hits. Type in religion and you will get 11 hits.

Here I'll give you several verses from the book of Matthew involving the conflict that arose between Christ and the Sanhedrin, but then you need to go back to Bible school and learn something.

Matt. 16:
[18] And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Matt. 26:
[14] Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went unto the chief priests,
[15] And said unto them, What will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto you? And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver.

Matt. 26:
[57] And they that had laid hold on Jesus led him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled.
[58] But Peter followed him afar off unto the high priest's palace, and went in, and sat with the servants, to see the end.
[59] Now the chief priests, and elders, and all the council, sought false witness against Jesus, to put him to death;
[60] But found none: yea, though many false witnesses came, yet found they none. At the last came two false witnesses,
[61] And said, This fellow said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days.
[62] And the high priest arose, and said unto him, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee?
[63] But Jesus held his peace. And the high priest answered and said unto him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God.
[64] Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.
[65] Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He hath spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard his blasphemy.
[66] What think ye? They answered and said, He is guilty of death.

I do not agree with some of the ID teachings, young earth for one, but I see no harm in presenting it as another "theory".

The harm is in facilitating ignorance of science by presenting conjecture that is not "theory" as though it were.

i have better things to do, you can find it yourself ,these people are known by their knee jerk conclusion with reading the full article, always putting down Republican candidates at the slightest pretext and a general inability to think rationally and logically.

'Why not have class discussions on homosexuality while we're at it.'

Nice circular reasoning at comparing a theory of evolution with sexual perversity, thats DU style building your arguments.

It should be 'these people are known by their knee jerk conclusion without reading the full article'.

"Are you illiterate or something, or finding it difficult to read?
Read the article fully,
This is what Devos said in the article
'He'd like to see local school districts be able to teach intelligent design if they choose to, although he wouldn't require that it be taught in science classes.' '

You're calling me an illiterate when several times I pointed out with direct quotes that you didn't even read the title of the topic or the article itself? So now you finally have read it and you find a sentence that makes DeVos sound kind of wishy-washy. Is that the best you could do? This quote totally supports my point that DeVos would like to have ID taught in science classes.

>>Many Republican politicians are doing this. Personally, I think it's just shoring up the vote and I doubt DeVos would really make a push for ID if he beats Granholm. I would still vote for the guy, because pandering is the name of the game in campaigning.<<

I would vote for an actual mule over Jenny.
Maybe all of you who are flipping out about this don't understand how bad we have it here in MI. While the southern and western states can be choosy, we are 49th in economic growth. Our businesses are leaving, our taxes are going up.

It's easy for those sitting pretty to say, "Oh this would make me stay away from the polls."
We don't have that choice. We have to do something. Hells Bells, we can't even sell our homes to get out of this state! We've looked into it and are stuck.

DeVos and his wife nearly got us vouchers. They do tons for our charters. Personally, with our schools sitting at 37th in the country, I don't think that teaching AI would help or hurt a thing. They suck anyway.

It is obvious to everyone that you are trying hard to take cover for not reading the article yourself before commenting. Just because you are embarrassed and mad at yourself, you don't need to take it out on the rest of us.

Why doesn't DeVos worry about the economic health of Michigan? Honestly, this is a textbook example on why DeVos may LOSE. Michigan workers don't give a crap about evolution, intelligent design, people born from pond scum or nuclear reaction, who cares? DeVos has already spent millions in this race and isn't even leading in most polls.

The theory of evolution does not contradict the idea of a Creator.

Evolution is about the how and the when, not the who.
