My guess is that since Northern VA has a very high Muslim population, Webb's comments were meant to alienate that voting block towards Allen.
George Allen will be the next President of the United States.
There have been anti-Semitic overtones by the Webb campaign from the beginning. This is just an additional part of it. I'm sure the question was a plant.
So asking if you have Jewish ancestors is "casting aspersions"? What's that about?
Okay, guess now we can ask anyone in politics about their backgrounds, and if they object, say they are denying their heritage for political reasons. Geez, the Democrats get angry if you ask them about their "heritage" of what they voted for two months previously.
I also note the article's smug commentary about how "unlikely" a Jewish person Senator Allen would make. Begs the question to the Post: what makes a Jew? Do they have some sort of special knowledge over this? Is this the same rationale that allows Bill Clinton to be African-American, when apparently Clarence Thomas isn't?
The only time it should matter is if they are against religion altogether. You know the first amendment doesn't say freedom from, it says freedom of religion. Peggy Fox is a stupid dem talking point for Gannett my local channel 9.
ping for later
That last part is troubling. Why would the fact whether someone is Jewish or not be an "aspersion"???
What's this about Webb's "horny" comment? Haven't the slightest clue what that's all about.
This is meant to be a hit piece on Allen. The above statement makes that plain and also the statement about how the poor anchor person was scared! Allen had every right to be pissed and he is correct: what was the point of asking this question except to stir the pot?
The reason for the "Macaca" hypocrisy was so that the left can go around saying that Allen is racist. This is their standard operating procedure. They listen to and record every word spoken and written by a conservative, and then try to find something for which they can destroy him/her. If they don't find something, they make something up. Their willing accomplices in the media immediately seize the opportunity and paint his/her words as racist.
Later, when it serves their marxist purposes, they remind the readers of the "racist" comments which weren't racist at all, but trumpted up by the left.
Kinky Friedman could not be reached for comment...
What's up with Webb and the "horny" comment? I haven't heard anything about that at all.
I don't know why Allen should be upset about the question. Yes it is an stupid irrelevant question, but you get a lot of those on the campaign trail. If a reporter were to come to me with a question about the religion of one of my ancestors, if I knew about it, I would tell a story about my Great Aunt Bertie, or whomever. If I didn't know about it, I would thank the reporter for the information and move on. I don't know why one should react in a hostile way.
i thought assimilation is lauded; why shouldn't the public know 'bout the Senator's background?
Unfortunately, Allen is melting under the spotlight. Of the 4 in the lead for POTUS, Rudy, Newt, Romney, and Allen-Allen was the clear choice. I hope he pulls it together-he was clearly having problems on MTP.
Two useful articles:

I support Allen, but I don't know why he didn't say something like: "The religion of my mother or her ancestors is not germane to this campaign. I am a Christian and a Presbyterian." Next question.
