I've worked with several lefties who put on a good front when they knew I was around. They expressed themselves entirely differently when they didn't know I could overhear them in the office next door.

Most lefties have no real settled convictions, except for the incongruously settled conviction that settled convictions are either impossible or dangerous. The only thing they really care about is seeming smart and sophisticated, and the only measure they know is the approbation of those around them. When they're with conservatives, they'll mute their treasonous/blasphemous rhetoric, but once around their own set, they bring it out and practice on each other.

I would suggest that in neither case are you hearing their true views, and further suggest that whatever their "true" views might be, even these are irrelevant, since their only foundation is the need to gain the approval of a certain social set, which itself is a transient thing.
