Big Brother is shouting at you (UK CCTV cameras fitted with loudspeakers)

Big Brother is shouting at you Last updated at 21:02pm on 16th September 2006

Big Brother is not only watching you - now he's barking orders too. Britain's first 'talking' CCTV cameras have arrived, publicly berating bad behaviour and shaming offenders into acting more responsibly.

The system allows control room operators who spot any anti-social acts - from dropping litter to late-night brawls - to send out a verbal warning: 'We are watching you'.

Middlesbrough has fitted loudspeakers on seven of its 158 cameras in an experiment already being hailed as a success. Jack Bonner, who manages the system, said: 'It is one hell of a deterrent. It's one thing to know that there are CCTV cameras about, but it's quite another when they loudly point out what you have just done wrong.

'Most people are so ashamed and embarrassed at being caught they quickly slink off without further trouble.

'There was one incident when two men started fighting outside a nightclub. One of the control room operators warned them over the loudspeakers and they looked up, startled, stopped fighting and scarpered in opposite directions.

'This isn't about keeping tabs on people, it's about making the streets safer for the law-abiding majority and helping to change the attitudes of those who cause trouble. It challenges unacceptable behaviour and makes people think twice.'

simply because it's the right thing to do.

No, because they have been taught to do it, and because to do otherwise would have been a gross error in the eyes of the culture.

Thanks, but I can write websites perfectly. I don't feel it is necessary to post accompanying images.

It's approaching the halloween season, and I can't walk into my local Walgreens now without being accosted by a halloween gadget that alternately says "hey!", "where are you going?", and "I see you."

I remember when I felt sorry for Hong Kong being turned over to a police state.

Boy, was I wrong!

CCTV is all well and good, but I would have a serious problem being on camera 24-7, and an even bigger problem with orders coming over a loud speaker.

Maybe you don't need it, but the brain function differently for various people and some us think in imagery and others it is verbal and some language!

Would be nice to include images when available many funciton and process differently in their thinking!

There's a reason why 'V' for Vendetta and 1984 are set in England.

"So, how did you day go, dear"

"Great, you should'a been there, I had one guy pee his pants right in the middle of the intersection as he flipped right off his bike; too bad he fell in smack in front of a lorry."

Orwell said at one point that the year 1984 was merely the first thing that came to him as a possible projection and was only the simple juxtaposition of the last two digits in the publication date: 1948.

It is funny but I am very good at doing things mechanical but in cyber space I have trouble when I can't visualized the next step.

Some of the commands if I am unfamilar with is hard for me grasp and wonder if I am doing it right!

Sometime I just don't bother I just let it along and I really recent it because I would like to use that funcition but I can't get pass the blank!

Some day I can visualized my words and some moments I draw a blank!

My memory does help me to cover a multitude of sins than there are times I can't sound things out I have no clue why it will work sometimes and not others and than I have a lazy eye which is also a blind spot! LOL

Lol...You and I both!
Einstein said he visualized the problem before he could write the formula...The hard part was writing what he visualized. After reading the article, it's easy to understand why!
