Coulter says U.S. due for vote on abortion [Ann speaks at Schuster Performing Arts Center]
Dayton Daily News ^ | Monday, September 11, 2006 | By Ismail Turay Jr.

Americans have waited too long for the right to vote on abortion, and the United States Supreme Court continues to drag its feet on the issue, said controversial columnist and best-selling author Ann Coulter, speaking to a packed house of more than 2,300 at the Schuster Performing Arts Center on Sunday night.

Her speech was part of Dayton Right to Life's Viva la Vita 2006 and included closing remarks by Republican gubernatorial candidate J. Kenneth Blackwell, Ohio's secretary of state.

Coulter took shots at Democrats for their "crazy" ideas and support for gay marriage and abortion rights. She called the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision a joke.

"The only way we will have the right to vote on abortion is if Bush puts another Clarence Thomas in the Supreme Court," Coulter said. "The court keeps getting away with murder because we keep letting it get away with murder."

Before the speech about 50 people, all but a handful opposed to Coulter, gathered outside the Schuster. Margaret Knapke called Coulter a hypocrite who claims to be pro-life but is pro-war and trivializes the loss of civilian life in Iraq.

Protester Michael Bashaw said he's concerned about "Coulter being a spokesperson for the moral high ground."

"This is perhaps the most divisive period in our country's history, and we don't need people of her ilk dividing us even more," Bashaw said.

"We need someone who can bring us all together, despite our differences."

Interesting approach; don't "repeal Roe v. Wade" but "Give voters the vote on abortion."

They're the same thing; one sounds better to some.

This has got to be the most specious comparison I've ever heard.

"Let's vote on it" has been Coulter's retort to the pro-abortion crowd for a good long time, going back at to at least a year ago.

When she adds that about 70 percent of Americans would vote against it, it silences her crowd of detractors immediately.

Mob rule.

Might as well have everyone vote on the price of gasoline, or "appropriate" corporate profits, or CEO compensation.

This belongs first in the Congress, and then left up to individual states.

I wonder where she got the 70% figure

I am pro-abortion but killers shouldn't get put to death.

"When she adds that about 70 percent of Americans would vote against it, it silences her crowd of detractors immediately."

If the Marxists really believed that most Americans are for abortion and gay marriage, then they would jump at the opportunity to put it to a vote.

The fact that they are too cowardly and know their position isn't shared by the majority says it all.

But wait, Iraqi deaths are 'deaths' of human who have a right to not be killed. Supporters of abortion insist that the baby is not a human, so it is not 'death', it is just surgical removal of the 'products of conception', or whatever the pleasant term du jour is.

Interestingly, the whole point of Roe v Wade is even worse than is normally realized. The Supreme Court permitted abortion because, like in the Dred Scott v Sanford decision, the Court assumed the right to *declare who was a person* for purposes of enjoying protection of the US Constitution.

Dred Scott was not a "person", he was property. Otherwise he would have the right to travel freely and keep and bear arms. That is a worry directly from the Majority Opinion.

A baby that has not been completely born is not a "person" either, according to the Court.

So, Roe v Wade is even a worse Constitutional mess than Coulter and most conservatives ever allow.

I love liberals telling us we're divided. Who polarized the country since 9/11 five years ago? Certainly not poor little Miss Ann Coulter and they know it!

When the liberals are as against abortion as they are against the war, then they can presume to lecture Ann on hypocrisy. Until then they ought to sit down and shut up.

"We need someone who can bring us all together, despite our differences."

I don't know about y'all but I don't want to be brought together with a bunch of Godless, baby killing RATS. There's little I'd consider worse. Well, I guess having to listen the The Hildabeaste screech for an hour would be close :)

Ann Coulter is right, we need another Clarence Thomas, and Ann has always said: "GIVE US BACK OUR COURTS!"

That is why the Republicans need to keep their majority in the U.S. Senate. so that they can still head the judicial committee.

If the Dems ever control the judicial committee, you can bet your bottom dollar that they won't allow President Bush's judicial nominees go to the floor for an up or down vote.

I say vote anyway, the power is not in the Supreme Court but in the people.

Nope. I like Ann's idea better.

"I wonder where she got the 70% figure"

Dunno. She does a lot of Lexis/Nexis research. I would assume she ran across something there.

Yes. That's why they shut-up when she makes the challenge to the audience. I've seen her do it twice on C-SPAN, and they go silent instantly. Not even a halfhearted slur or an attempt to refute it.
