If this is terrorism, I'd guess Syrian forces would likely (albeat begrudgingly) be fighting terrorists, rather than blatantlyh being the terrorists.

Black smoke is most often from petrochemicals, 'twould seem.

They'd better be fighting the terrorists. Assad is a twerp and scumbag, but I don't think he's sufficiently insane to attack an embassy during a Republican administration. There's nothing to be gained and everything to lose.

While Syria makes trouble for us in Iraq, it also has its own troubles with Islamic fundamentalists. If I had to guess, and it's ONLY a guess at this point, it would be that jihadis are attacking the US Embassy, Syrian government installations, or both.
