Witnesses: Gunfire, explosions near U.S. embassy in Damascus
By Haaretz Service and news agencies
Syrian security forces surrounded the U.S. embassy in Damascus early on Tuesday and sealed off the area, witnesses said, adding that heavy gunfire and explosions had been heard in the area.
"It appears that the embassy is coming under attack," one resident in the area told Reuters.
There was no independent confirmation of the initial reports.

We certainly know talk show hosts use FR for show prep.
True.
It's also an incorrect statement whenever the Breaking News is linked to a valid url source, as this one was: Hareetz.
Televsion braodcasters check the sources and get confirmation. DUH.
dfwgator? is that you Rush?
True, as do a lot of bloggers.
You would think that that is one embassy that would be prepared for the worst. I'd be very surprised if there is not overwhelming surveillance and security, and perhaps escape tunnels.
we have embassies almost everywhere....the only exceptions I can name are cuba (mission only), iran (obvious), and DPRK (I think).
you lose nothing by having an embassy (unless marine guards let kgb agents in, etc), and by having one you can support espionage, diplomatic contacts, and in general keep talking to your adversary. Contrary to rhetoric here, you should always keep talking, even if you plan to bomb someone tomorrow..
how could (why should) they answer hundreds of calls, mainly from the media? I suspect the secure lines are another matter.
Thank you for your thoughts.
I'm amused by the scrolling information board at the one in Cuba.

Are you in Damascus? Have you witnessed anything? If so, send us your story.A fill-in form follows.
Never.
That link doesn't say anything about the embassy being closed in '04. Of if it does, I missed it. :)

Hmm So it's like a little international city type thing?
