Today I have used a quote from the Vice President as no remarks of the President has been posted on the White House Website
QUOTE OF THE DAY
Vice President's Remarks at the Pentagon Observance of September 11th
The Pentagon
THE VICE PRESIDENT: Mr. Secretary, General Pace, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen: Five years ago, September 11th forever ceased to be an ordinary date on the calendar. So we gather, once again, to recall events that still have the power to move us, and always will. And we honor the men, women, and children whose lives were taken, so suddenly and so coldly, here at the Pentagon, at the World Trade Center, and on a field in Pennsylvania. We remember all that we saw, and heard, and felt on that Tuesday morning, and also how much the world changed on the 11th of September, 2001.
Nine-eleven is a day of national unity. The memories stay with all of us because the attack was directed at all of us. We were meant to take it personally, and we still do take it personally.
The ones who were lost had begun that day just as you and I did -- as free citizens of a peaceful country. They were busy with life. They had people who cared about them, people who depended on them, people who loved the sight of their face and the sound of their voice. They were unsuspecting of danger and undeserving of their fate. Each one of them had hopes and plans for the future. All of that was taken away by the wicked plans of a few men.
I will always remember leaving the White House after nightfall on September 11th. From a helicopter along the Potomac, we saw the scene of the crash, the lights pointed at the Pentagon, and the smoke that had been rising since early that morning.
What happened here at 9:37 a.m. on September 11th challenges anyone's powers of description. Perhaps no one expressed it better than an Army lieutenant colonel who was here that morning attempting to rescue others. It was all, as he put it, so "cheap, dirty and senseless."
PHOTOS OF THE DAY
- Being 911 anniversary I feel that it is only fitting that one of the photos and the quote of the day is of the Vice President as he played a very major role in the events of September 11th 2001. Also as Brit I had to put a photo of Baroness Thatcher as one of the photos of the day IMHO the greatest British politician in my living memory

Thank you very much for putting this together!
I have to add a story to some that were already told.
I collect military figures (1/6th Scale). A collector on a figure board told this story.
On Sept. 11th he worried how his little son would react to these horrific events. He thought about what to tell him to comfort and reassure him. As he paced in his den/office, he noticed that one of his GI Joe figures was missing, but he had too much else on his mind.
Finally he went to tuck his son in. He told his son that he shouldn't worry because the bad men who did these things would be punished.
His son looked at him with no fear in his eyes. He pulled back his covers, and there was his father's missing figure.
"I'm not afraid, Daddy! We've got GI Joe to protect us."
Out of the mouth of a child!
I finally got to go through the whole dose this afternoon. Of course it wasn't without tears in my eyes! I am so very proud of our wonderful President and First Lady. To see him comforting the families--again, as I have said so many times--he is such a genuine man! I love him!
I am so proud also of the VP and Mrs. Cheney and Secs. Rumsfeld and Rice. What wonderful people GWB has surrounded himself with --it is a testament to his character.
I was thrilled to see Baroness Thatcher. What a wonderful gesture for her to make that arduous trip. She looks great.
I know the 9/11 Dose was a huge job. Thank you for undertaking that task!
I have a personal request. My twin sister is also a Freeper....Repandproudofit. We are meeting in Paris Friday for our birthday! An event of personal interest may occur while we're gone and I would appreciate someone pinging her to that thread.
Her son (Stewart Cink) is a pro golfer and a member of the U.S. Ryder Cup team. The team and their wives are going to the White House before leaving to take on the Europeans in Ireland, probably be next week. Please ping her if photos of that event appear on a Daily Dose thread. Thanks!
