STEVE Irwin had embarrassed millions of Australians, Germaine Greer said last night.
And those who had mourned him with their tributes at the Irwin family's Australia Zoo in what the British had labelled "a Princess Diana moment" were idiots, she said.
British-based Greer wrote in The Guardian newspaper after Irwin's death that the animal world had taken revenge on "self-deluded animal tormentor Steve Irwin".
Last night, she went even further.
She told Channel 9's A Current Affair she did not understand Australians' feelings of loss for Irwin.
She said he had exploited animals by telling the world how dangerous they were and then treating them disrespectfully.
"I find the whole Steve Irwin phenomenon (embarrassing) -- and I'm not the only person who did," Greer said.
But when pushed, she was unable to name anyone who had publicly agreed with her.
She rejected claims her sentiments were "un-Australian".
"I don't care what I'm being called," Greer said.
"I just hope I'm out of touch with what idiots are thinking."

When did "I" say Steve "purposely" harrassed anything, his intentions was to get compelling video footage to show on TV, to do so he must place himself near animals.
Animals have ingrained fight or flight reactions. Putting yourself near ones up the chances it will react in a harmful manner. Even domesticated animals lash out and kill oiccasionally.
God or Darwin ( choose your own poison) gave the Ray a means of protection and it used it on Steve. Sad story, but the fact remains Steve placed himself near the Ray and it reacted. Steve's fault, not the ray.
from the: "I love my daddy' - Bindy (Steve Irwin's Daughter)" thread your post 372
You quoted me thusly: "saying it was an Unavoidable accident is about as untrue as one can get."
Your reply: Unless, of course, you've actually read any info.
Am I to infer that you agree it was Unavoidable or not from the above posting of yours?
If you actually read FACTS, his death was a unavoidable tragic accident.
Stingrays RARELY kill. There was NO reason Irwin should have thought the ray could or would kill him.
You are also ignoring post 215 that contains info about a possible 2nd stingray.
You state that Irwins death was avoidable. I say only if he hides from life as you apparently do. He would have had to quit his job, stop relocating dangerous animals for the government, not buy land for animal preserves and he would have to stay in his house since he lived at the zoo. Your suggestion is idiocy. Your spin won't work.
Btw, is it avoidable or unavoidable that you get fired for posting on company time?
"If you actually read FACTS, his death was a unavoidable tragic accident."
OK some facts for you:
FACT: Steve moved his own body close to a ray, close enough to get hit by the lethal tail barb of a Stingray.
Fact: If Steve were say not even in the water and allowed the camera crew to use "long" lenses from afar and he later over dubbed the footage with his commentary he would have lessened his chances of dying by a Stingray tail barb to the heart.
"Btw, is it avoidable or unavoidable that you get fired for posting on company time?"
Being that I own the company I find it most likely "avoidable"
It just occurred to me (I'm slow I guess)--that her problem with Steve is more likely the fact he's a successful white male and not a female. Simple as that. Greer is a hateful, jealous, miserable idiot.
Fact: If Steve were say not even in the water and allowed the camera crew to use "long" lenses from afar and he later over dubbed the footage with his commentary he would have lessened his chances of dying by a Stingray tail barb to the heart.
There have been no official statements that I have seen. Did you find any from the police, coroner or the Irwin family? Where did you get your "facts"?
Being that I own the company I find it most likely "avoidable"
Are your employees allowed to post?
He'd be Jim Fowler. Jim who?
These people are all gonna DIE! (someday)
Marlin and Jim were great to watch when I was a kid. Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom was a must see at my house.
The joke at our house was:
Marlon Perkins: I'll wait here while Jim goes downriver and pokes the lion to see if he's awake.
Well the story states Steve was swiming with the rays, granted it does not mention if he was forced to do so but being that he films a TV show about being close to animals and gets paid well to do it I will assume he made the decision to place himself in the water. I would think the accounts of the incident would note if he was under duress and being forced at speargun point to swim with the rays.
Do you have info that Steve was forced to go into the water against his will?
What point?
Showing how anti-human, anti-man this old hag of a man-hater is.
This is what radical feminzism leads to.
Again, neither the police, coroner or family has issued any statements about the circumstances. You were given a link to a post with info given to a Freeper. We don't know for certain WHAT happened other than he was stung in the heart by a stingray.
You have also been given links that show that he was safer swimming with a stingray than you are driving home from work. If you wish to ignore facts that's your choice.
She's uglier than a wombat in attack mode.
