Haleigh Poutre Almost Victim of Euthanasia, Now Making Good Progress

Boston, MA (LifeNews.com) -- Haleigh Poutre was the victim of child abuse and was nearly killed via euthanasia when Massachusetts officials gave up on her after she entered a coma. Now Poutre, once termed "brain dead" by doctors, continues to improve and is speaking a few words, her grandmother says.

Sandra Sudyka, the girl's biological grandmother, is no longer allowed to visit her granddaughter and now says she is ready to speak to the media about Poutre's condition.

She told The Republican newspaper that she last saw Poutre on July 18 but indicated she was "doing well."

"She was bright-eyed and smiling. She is always responsive to us," Sudyka explained.

Department of Social Services had asked Sudyka not to talk with reporters about Haleigh, but since they will no longer allow her and Haleigh's biological mother, Allison Avrett, to visit the 12 year-old, she said she's going to talk to the media.

"I decided since they broke the deal, I am going to talk. People should know how well she is doing," Sudyka told the newspaper.

"They don't want people to know how she is doing after they wanted to pull the plug," Sudyka said.

DSS spokeswoman Denise Monteiro declined an interview with The Republican but said that the visiting privileges have been suspended, not terminated.

Haleigh first began speaking in June, her grandmother told the newspaper.

"I was saying to her 'I love you,' and she was trying to say 'love' and it came out as a vibration...'ove,'" Sudyka said.

Sudyka, who is working with an attorney to adopt the girl, said she has said hello, responds to comments and questions, speaks nonverbally and is able to write her name. Haleigh can't walk and is confined to a wheelchair.

Avrett, Poutre's biological mother, lost custody of her daughter after physically abusing her. Poutre was put into a foster home where her adoptive parents also abused her. Her adopted mother committed suicide after abusing Poutre so much she had to be hospitalized.

DSS took Poutre into custody and when she appeared to slip into a coma, the agency asked the state Supreme Court for permission to take her life. That's when Poutre began responding.

Poutre has been receiving physical, speech and occupational therapy since January 26 at Franciscan Hospital for Children in Brighton.

Gov. Mitt Romney appointed a commission to look into how the state failed to properly handle the girl's case.

McCollum will have lots of cleaning up to do if he becomes the new AG.

McCollum has a decision to make... Will he clean house or let things continue to fester? Crist didn't do a thing except attack the phone company which was phoney cuz his friend owned the phone company. Crist didn't have the skill as an attorney or a prosecutor to be attorney general. We were hoodwinked so the state is a big mess.

If we have a dem governor, McCollum may decide to rat out the bad people to save the state. Right now we are experiencing organized chaos. I don't wish for it to be any less organized.

The devaluing of life is evident in other areas, often in subtle ways. When there is a car accident during rush hour, what does everybody think? "I hope nobody was badly hurt, or killed." If that's what everybody's thinking, why do the tv and radio reports focus on the effect it will have on commuters, and never mention what anyone who cares about life is worried about? Children are beaten to death by their parents every day, and usually nobody cares. Unless there's something else about the case they think is important. Like a celebrity, or a mystery with lots of twists and turns. There's been a rash of homeless people being beaten to death, and most people won't even hear about it. Most of those that do hear about it, won't pay any attention. I can't drive for 15 minutes without seeing at least one driver who completely disregards every life on the road in his quest to win the race. If an animal runs into traffic, many drivers are more apt to aim for it than try to avoid it. Most people don't bother pulling over for emergency vehicles anymore. They don't want to be slowed down, just to save some stranger's life. We shouldn't be surprised that people want inconvenient people to just stop existing, as though it has nothing to do with life and death.

Read the article I linked to in post #316. I realize if you wait until the body is cold, it's too late to harvest the organs. But couldn't we at least wait until they're dead before harvesting the organs?

It doesn't mean that they're not in cahoots.

Besides, too often the family is put under tremendous pressure to do that, or in some cases the state takes over. Look at Terri. She was murdered, even though they couldn't use her organs cause of the starvation and dehydration.

Or the family is outright lied to about the outcome of the patient.

They wait until brain death. The leave the body on a heart and lung machine ("life support") while the organs are removed because if oxygenated blood flow stops while the organ is still warm, the tissue will die. So no, we can't wait and never have.

How many organ donors would there be, if everyone knew the organs are taken while the patient is still alive? This man's organs were taken while he was in a medically induced coma. He wasn't dead yet. He died AFTER his organs were removed.

He would have been placed in a coma due to brain damage in an attempt to prevent deterioration. Apparently this was ineffective. His family approved removal from life support and organ donation. That was their decision to make, and someone else in the same situation is free to make a different decision.

Why dodge the issue? The fact is, he was alive when they took his organs. How does his family, or anyone else, have the right to decide such a thing?

He would be dead a minute later in either case.

I have more compassion for you than you have for disabled people. I was just trying to get you to imagine what it would be like if you were the patient. You seem to have no problem understanding that it would be wrong to take your organs while you're still using them. But you think it's just hunky dorey to take someone else's organs while they're still using them. It's completely different when it's you, huh?

As I said, it's not different for me. If I'm unconscious on life support and my family decides to take me off life support, I hope they will donate my organs so that I might help someone else in my death.

Bull. You don't want to give up your organs while you're still using them, or you wouldn't gotten upset over the suggestion. But you sure want others to give up their organs while they're still using them.

Where did I get upset over the suggestion? Are you referring to the post where you snidely suggested I go commit suicide? Because there I was annoyed at your audacity.
