Sugar-Laced Agency Airs Acrid Gallagher Ad
The Tampa Tribune ^ | Sep 3, 2006 | WILLIAM MARCH and MICHAEL FECHTER

TAMPA - Florida's sugar industry, which has spent millions attacking Jim Davis in the Democratic primary for governor, has now piled in on the other side of the race, helping fund an advertising attack on Tom Gallagher in the Republican primary.

Since Aug. 11, Big Sugar has poured around $800,000 into an organization called "Floridians for Truth and Integrity in Government," which is running the ad against Gallagher.

The ad attempts, with no factual basis, to link an ethics complaint against Gallagher to Florida's crisis in homeowners insurance rates.

The Truth and Integrity committee is linked to and is supported by another committee financed largely by a supporter of Charlie Crist, Gallagher's opponent in the Republican primary.

On Thursday, around the same time its ad began running, Truth and Integrity received $500,000 in contributions from major Florida sugar companies including U.S. Sugar Corp., Flo-Sun Inc. and related companies.

Truth and Integrity had previously received $100,000 from companies associated with Alico Inc., a sugar, citrus and cattle agribusiness, and $255,000 from another committee called the Coalition for Florida Families, an organization funded in part by U.S. Sugar through still other political committees.

Spokesmen for the sugar companies couldn't be reached for comment Friday and Saturday.

Ping to Coleus thread on what will happen in Congress starting tomorrow...

Congress will reconvene beginning Sept. 5 with legislation supported by pro-life and pro-family Americans hanging in the balance. The Senate and House of Representatives probably will have little more than a month, if that much time, to deal with legislation before the November election. Republican leaders in Congress long ago set Oct. 6 as the target date for adjournment. They may seek to adjourn earlier, however, to send their party’s members home as soon as possible to campaign in what appears will be a tight race for control of both houses.

Clock ticking on pro-life, pro-family bills as House and Senate reconvene

Strong summary. Read it before and it holds up to a second reading. I'm glad the Washington Times picked it up.

>> I covered the Terri Schiavo case for more than four years, going against nearly all of the other media in emphasizing and documenting that this was not a "right to die" case, but a disability-rights case.

We know, Mr. Hentoff, we know.

We still have squirreled away the very first issue of The Washington Times when it came out and everyone warned it was an ersatz news source which wouldn't last. I remember some of the higher ups hid the fact they read it just like one of those supermarket scandal sheets.

Not to mention Plan de travaux scientifiques nécessaires pour réorganiser la société (1822) (Plan of scientific studies necessary for the reorganization of society) by Isidore Marie Auguste François Xavier Comte, a lunatic and leftist luminary. Translation: all human beings, forget your own plans for life, I'm going to tell you how to live -- at gunpoint.

(Can anyone explain to me why the left sucks up to every moonbat and convicted criminal who writes an autobiography on prison stationery? The list is long.)

When I lived in Virginia, one of the joys was home delivery of the WTimes. It came before 6:00 a.m. and I could enjoy it with my coffee :-)

Robin Cook, that master of the medical mystery (and a physician in his spare time :-) ) based one of his novels on egg donation. Can't think of the title. Maybe somebody will remember. It was a good "read," as we say these days.

Just did a little checking. I believe the book's title was "Shock."

"More than just empty calories, I heard that sugar actually leaches out some of the good stuff. And it teaches the body to bahave to an easy fix not too different from the addictive qualities of alcohol. Anyway, we practically eliminated it from our diet, politics or no politics, and feel the better for it."

I've also heard that too much sugar can cause cancer.

I use Stevia for coffee or to make drinks such as lemonade, because it has been around for hundreds of years. The strictist health experts approve of Stevia. Only thing is, you can't bake with it.

In one of the debates, TOM GALLAGHER said he is AGAINST AMNESTY for illegal aliens and said that Florida's Sen.Immigration Bill S.2611 would cost $50 billion, and he against this bill and wants to protect our borders.

TOM GALLAGHER said that his opponent CHARLIE CRIST is FOR AMNESTY & FOR Florida's Sen. Immigration BILL# S.2611 and said that CHARLIE CRIST claims it is not an amnesty bill because CRIST says that the Senate Bill is for EARNED LEGALIZATION (for illegal aliens).

Earned legalization = AMNESTY

WHAT THEY ARE SAYING ABOUT THE SENATE IMMIGRATION PLAN:

“The Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2006” (S.2611)…needs significant changes before it represents the comprehensive approach required to dramatically and permanently decrease illegal border crossing and unlawful presence in the United States…Deterrence is an essential component of security, but the Senate plan would undermine deterrence. Provisions in the bill provide for the “legalization” of individuals unlawfully present in the United States for over five years. This amounts to a grant of amnesty to millions.” (The Heritage Foundation "Senate Immigration Plan Fails to Deliver Comprehensive Border Security" by James Jay Carafano, 05/16/06)

Brett Doster, Campaign Manager

FINAL DAY BEFORE THE ELECTION: THE CHOICE IS CLEAR

Gallagher Team,

This is an important day. We have approximately 20 hours before the polls open in what is shaping up to be one of the most important primary elections of our time. There is a lot to think about this Labor Day weekend. People are going to be taking time away to be with their families, enjoy some football, and get some rest.

However, while you are spending time with your families, remember that tomorrow will be an important time for your families as well. Voters will face a clear choice as to whether to continue on the conservative path blazed by Governor Jeb Bush or to choose a more liberal path blazed by the likes of Howard Dean and John Kerry. Remember as you make that choice that our Party will not be made stronger by seeking détente with the Democrats on issues that will define who we are as a society. The choice is clear.

Tom Gallagher will protect our economic strength by not raising taxes, and he will take leadership on the homeowners’ insurance crisis. Tom Gallagher will work with Congress to protect our borders and stop the flow of illegal immigration that threatens our security. And Tom Gallagher will protect our families by defending traditional marriage and the unborn.

Charlie Crist has broken ranks with conservative leaders and endorsed the liberal Democrat class-size amendment that was part of Bill McBride’s education plan and which even Jeb Bush has said will raise your taxes. Charlie Crist has irresponsibly endorsed the Senate Immigration Plan which provides illegal immigrants with amnesty before our borders are secured. Charlie Crist supports the Howard Dean plan of civil union-style gay marriage. And Charlie Crist is pro-choice.

Please urge your friends, neighbors, and family to turn out tomorrow and support Tom Gallagher for Governor. The future of our state and the future of our Party will depend upon your actions.

Thank you so much for your ongoing support, and we look forward to campaigning with you in the general election.

Thanks for posting that. You have been a great supporter of Tom Gallagher in trying to point out that Tom is the conservative in this race. No one should have to put up with some of the trashing and name calling you have endured because you support Tom.

Thanks from all of us that cannot be there on the ground to support Tom.
