Yale School of Medicine Requires Abortion Training for Ob/gyn Residents
LifeSiteNews ^ | 8/23/06 | Peter J. Smith

NEW HAVEN, Connecticut, August 23, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Ob/gyn residents at Yale’s School of Medicine must undergo training in abortion procedures in a required residency program established by Planned Parenthood’s Connecticut branch (PPC).

Second year ob/gyn residents will have to complete two four-week rotations with PPC for training in abortion techniques such as vacuum suction, medical abortions, and other “family planning” services in a program entitled Family Planning/Ambulatory Surgery.

"Yale is very satisfied with the experience and training the residents are receiving at PPC and are especially happy with the number of patients the residents see," said Mary Bawza, chief operating officer of PPC to Planned Parenthood’s Choice! magazine.

Although the course is required in the residency curriculum, ob/gyn residents do not have to participate in any abortions if they sign a paper that states they believe abortion is against their “personal/religious” beliefs. However, residents cannot opt of learning the theoretical applications of the program, including techniques related to still-birth, miscarriage, and complications related to abortion. Students also cannot opt out of performing ultrasounds on women intending to have abortions.

PPC established the course last year as part a frantic campaign to replace the imploding and aging population of abortionists, whose numbers have declined 37% since the 1980s. Although worried about their population decline, PPC seems oddly determined to spread their abortion practices deeper into the heartland of the United States claiming studies indicate 87% of US counties and 97% of rural counties have no abortionists.

Comments to Yale may be sent to Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences and the department’s Residency Program Coordinator:

RSteyn seems to have been returned to the DUmmies.

Your post #139 is precisely right. The "we-need-abortion-because-of-rape" argument is a red herring.

However, when I see a poster drag out that tired old fish, and try to emotionalize it even further by positing the hideousness of bearing a rapist's child, I like to post that picture of the beautiful Lee Ezell and her beautiful daughter, who could almost be her twin.

Might make 'em think twice about that argument.

They keep sneaking back in. But they can't hide their true intentions for long. That particular person has been recycled numerous times in my opinion.

People here disagree with each other on lots of issues, and sometimes it gets a little rough.

But advocating abortion is an acid test issue, rightfully so.

Why would they want to? It's a great opportunity to say, "Hey, look! There's a baby in there!"

"RSteyn" seems to have departed FR. There is a young woman whom I've known for her entire life who was raped and became pregnant last year. She now has a one year old baby and she will be the first to tell you how her greatest joy in life has come from her biggest tragedy.

The whole rape-abortion argument is a juvenile trait that most people grow out of before they get out of elementary school. It is really no different than a child bargaining with his parents to be allowed to do something, eventually the child says, "well can I do it if such and such condition is met?" The parent agrees because they know that the likelihood of that condition being met are essentially nil.

I usually just look at these "we have to save abortion because of rape and incest" types and tell them it's fine by me. As long as a police report has been filed and the young woman is prepared to fully cooperate in prosecuting the man, then she should be allowed to have her abortion. The bottom line is that this argument covers less than 10,000 women a year, while the abortion industry is killing more than 3,500 babies EVERY SINGLE DAY.

When my sister-in-law was pregnant a couple years ago, she had one of those 3-D "high definition" style ultrasounds done when she was about 6 months pregnant. My brother showed me the pictures and it blew me away, it was like looking at a photograph.

"Actually, this says that they have to specifically opt-out of helping to perform abortions. Those who do not do so will, therefore, assist in them."

Not sure what your point is, at least relevant to what I have said in any of my posts.

Go follow the backtrail and read my post being responded to.

I guess that means you've given up trying to persuade the "we have to save abortion because of rape and incest types."

I agree, they're using a "juvenile" argument. And I agree, it could be a sign of a character flaw they'll never grow out of.

But OTOH, I think that photo is so powerful, it could change a few minds.

At the very least, it might get them past some of their pre-conceptions, so to speak!

RSteyn does seem to have fled the thread. Is it possible he or she is pondering something read here...might have had a glimmer of light penetrate through the fog of feminazi propaganda that clouds his or her thinking? We can hope.

So these residents are being taught to do abortions and we have to keep abortion legal for all the pregnant 10 year olds out there.....that argument is even more disingenuous than the "maternal health" argument.

You were responding to this question:

But do they perform real abortions as part of the training?

When you said "No" and suggested reading the article. I was just pointing out that the students had to opt out in order to not assist in abortions.

I haven't given up on these people, instead I try to illustrate how absurdly insignificant their argument is.

"So these residents are being taught to do abortions and we have to keep abortion legal for all the pregnant 10 year olds out there.....that argument is even more disingenuous than the "maternal health" argument."

And that is besides the fact that when 10 yr. old pregnant girls walk into a Planned Parenthood clinic, none of these "health" workers alert the police or social services that a rape has occurred.

Hi all.
I'm not surprised to read this about abortion. I actually interviewed at Yale for a position in OBGYN as a resident. I graduated from a major med school and remember that they were doing abortions in the clinic. Although they were very interested in me, I didn't apply.
I went to another program and although, there, abortion was not obligatory, I got blackballed for not doing them. Although I had great in service exam scores, they claimed that I was a total incompetent and fired me, destroying my medical career.
Choosing to go to medicine to save people and bring new life into the world is replaced by a contraception/abortion mentality. Any descent is not tolerated.

Thanks for listening

My wife's uncle has been an OBGYN (he's semi-retired now) for almost 40 years and he has NEVER performed an abortion. He talks about what a joy it is to deliver the children of women that delivered early in his career. My belief is that if physicians aren't willing to stand by their principles and allowed to do so, then the rest of us are doomed.

Welcome to Free Republic, hope you stick around. We REALLY NEED pro-life physicians (especially OBGYNs) who know what they're talking about.
