Syria will close Lebanon borders if UN troops are deployed 23/08/2006 - 17:40:38

Syria has threatened to close its border with Lebanon if UN peacekeepers are deployed along the border, Finland’s foreign minister said today.

“They will close their borders for all traffic if UN troops are deployed along the Lebanon-Syria border,” Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja said after meeting his Syrian counterpart, Walid Moallem, in Helsinki. Finland holds the rotating presidency of the European Union.

“This closing of the border would certainly have negative consequences for the people living in the region,” Tuomioja told reporters after his meeting with Moallem. The Syrian foreign minister was not present at the news conference.

In an interview with Dubai Television, Syria’s President Bashar Assad rejected any deployment of UN troops along the Syrian border with Lebanon, saying such a move would create animosity between the two countries.

Tuomioja described EU-Syria relations as “quite cool and distant”.

“They wish to see better relations with the EU,” he said. “From our side, we made it clear what the EU expects from Syria, and that we will be watching them.”

I don't think the Syrians have to worry...last I heard France sent its usual 2 guys and a rowboat. Don't believe there will be all that many UN troops.

So it sounds like the Syrians want a POROUS border to rearm the Hesbos and hence the shreiking over troops (sets of eyes) being on the border.

How'd you like to depend on 200 French engineers for humanitarian relief?

saying such a move would create animosity between the two countries.

Is Assad trying to entice us with this promise.

And the downside to this is... exactly what?

(other than Syrian and Iranian terrorists being unable to return home)
Works for me!

This is the downside to all that nonsense about Hez wins if they have one guy left. Syria acts like it is in a stronger position than it actually is.

I think the "problem" may be to whomever the syrians allow to run drugs and weapons over their border. Let's watch and see who screams the loudest, after this threat from asshat.
