Best and worst commercials of the year
MSNBC ^ | Aug 22, 2006 | Gael Fashingbauer Cooper

Only one commercial can top the sheer hatred our readers have for the winner of this year's worst-commercial contest. Yes, only creepy, toenail-snapping Digger the Dermatophyte is more hated than the horrendous repetition that is this year's winning loser, the HeadOn headache remedy commercial.

In case you haven't seen it (you can find it on YouTube, but really, why would you want to?), the commercial is as insanely simple as it is annoying. A female voice repeats "HeadOn: Apply directly to the forehead!" three times as a blissed-out smug woman rolls what appears to be a Bonne Bell LipSmacker on her head.

What in the name of a glue stick in disguise is going on there? First off, does anyone believe that this works any better than, say, rubbing your head with your hand? Who decided that a commercial where only the product name and tagline are repeated over and over was good advertising? What kind of drugs is the model in the ad actually on? And does anyone know anyone who has ever, ever used this product, or seen it for sale anywhere outside these ads?

The best commercial I've seen was from Jack in the Box with George Hamilton.

He said one of the restaurant's new sandwiches was the best thing he's ever tasted........except for the caviar that he ate out of the navel of that supermodel.

I was dumbfounded..........then laughed myself silly.

The Capitol One pillagers are fun to watch and have a pretty good work ethic, too.

I concur, those are some very good ads. I especially like the one with the pillager pushing the airline beverage cart, thumping all the aisle passengers with his spiked mace/flail thingy.

I'm down on the SW side of the state - outside of Mobile. I love the place too. I've only been here for about ten years, but plan on retiring here as soon as the piggybank will accomodate. Have fun at the Tigers' game! Alas, my favorite Tigers come in Purple and Gold!

Which cellphone ad is the one where the guy comes up to the girl and the girl lies about her cellphone not catching his calls? I hate that ad, I can't stand it when a woman avoids rather then just says no thanks. (and yes, guys do that too from time to time :p)

What the heck were they singing???

Something about Quiznos subs and "they have a pepper bar." I LOVED the Quiznos commercials with the guy raised by wolves, where they showed him suckling on the momma wolf. They didn't last for long.

My latest favorite is a lottery commercial (I think) where the guy bets the other guy a million dollars he can't make a jump on an old abandoned bike. For some reason, every time that bike falls apart, I laugh.

I like the FedEx commercial where the executives at a table say, "OK folks we have got to come up with some ideas." So the smarmy, little weazle guy say, "We could Save 15% with FedEX on line shipping." The room falls silent,....then the guy who has gone through life with only his looks rips the little geek off and repeats word for word what the geek says, only he moves his hands differently. Everyone in the room goes with the silver-spoon guy at the expense of the geek dude. Ain't it so like real life? The looks and hoots of the other 'executives' are priceless.

The thing that cracks me up with those Little Richard spots is how hard that chick is trying not to bust out laughing.

Although I agree that "Bob" gets a little tiresome there was one of those Enzyte commercials that cracked me up every time. In it Bob is negotiating with Japanese businessmen. Every time the head of their delegation makes an offer Bob justs sits there with that grin on his face. At one point one of the subordinates says in an aside voice with sub-titles, "He is the wood that will not bend!'.

I haven't seen that ad in some time...

I was watching a commercial for a bank, I think it is Washington Mutual or something like that. They showed a group of guys and something struck me as strange about it.

I finally figured it out. There was a group of maybe 20 people who were all the bad guys. Every single one was a White male. There was only one good guy shown. A Black guy.

A few minutes later I saw another one and laughed. It was Truth and just about all the good guy kids were some minority, then they showed the evil Tobacco guys. Again every single one was a White male.

I hate the Bob with the big member commercials.

I also hate the way the production of the commercials "master" the sound of the commercials so that you have to hit the button to decrease the volumn of sound for the commercials.

Worst. Commercial. Ever. goes to a radio ad that plays on Rush and other local stations in Detroit. Starts with a bass guitar, then some moron signing in a rock beat "It's time to live, the Mortgage Experts." Automatic "break-the-radio-turning-it-off." Not sure what the premise is. Maybe it's a mortgage company for zombies. Anyway, I miss a whole lot of Rush and his other advertisers for that commercial.

5. The Progressive commercials with the smug jerk wearing the cheesy light blue suit.

Amen, brother - makes me think of Neal Boortz mimicing the word "progressive" in that baby talk voice of his that he does so well - he used the same voice to talk about hitlery's "Listening Tour". I hate anything "progressive". It basically means reach for your wallet - someone is trying to get something out of it.

I liked it with the two guys. Then they dumped the funny guy and added an uptight looking woman in his place.

Boooo....
