President Bush Files for Divorce with Catholic Base

Catholic Pro-Life Leader states: “President Bush’s implied support for the abortion-causing drug Plan B is completely inconsistent with his recent veto of the embryonic stem cell research funding bill”

FRONT ROYAL, Va., Aug. 21 /Christian Newswire/ -- The Rev. Thomas J. Euteneuer, president of Human Life International, issued the following response to President George W. Bush’s statements today regarding his support for Andrew von Eschenbach and his recent decision to seek over-the-counter (OTC) status for the abortifacient drug Plan B. When asked by reporter Bill Sammon about the situation, Bush stated: “I believe that Plan B ought to be -- ought to require a prescription for minors, is what I believe. And I support Andy's decision.”

“President Bush’s implied support for the abortion-causing drug Plan B is completely inconsistent with his recent veto of the embryonic stem cell research (ESCR) funding bill. What the president apparently fails to realize is that Plan B kills the same innocent unborn children that the ESCR process does.

“The president must demonstrate a consistent respect for the sanctity of all human life or he risks provoking a great divorce with the conservative Catholics that compromise a large part of his support base. Human beings in the embryonic stage of development deserve equal protection under the law and the president’s position falls far short of that mark.

“I reiterate my call for President Bush to withdraw his nomination of Andrew von Eschenbach for FDA commissioner and I implore him to rethink his own reckless approach to the powerful abortion-causing Plan B drug regimen.”

That's thread where you were admonished about attacking me personally and now you are here doing the same

Is that your final answer? You may want to reconsider.

If it is not addressed to you personally, it is not personal.

Who ever thought Bush was a true "conservative?"

I did.

Damn was that ever a mistake.

And I, being an agnostic pro-lifer, completely agree with this statement.

Thank you for your contribution! It's good to know that common sense is still around.

Brilliant comment! You can tell by my tagline that I am pro-life, but I think you are right on the money. If a person's heart is changed so that they respect the sanctity of human life, they will not choose to have an abortion whether it is legal or not.

well, he's stuck since it is a medical decision and abortion is legal...

And since we've been able to order women to take pills similar to plan B for twenty years, it's not exactly new. Indeed, we used to believe that since sex caused ovulation, and sperm took hours to hit the ovum, that taking it right away would be contraceptive, not abortifactive...

Yeah, like Catholics have been really big Bush supporters anyway.

Conservative Catholics, yes. If he and/or the GOP want to tell us to go you-know-what ourselves, we'll stay home, vote for third party candidates, etc.

It's not like Republicans are winning these elections in landslides you know. Florida goes to Gore or Ohio to Kerry and it's 8 years of Democrats.

People who won't vote for a Republican because of this decision or sit out and not vote will pay the price when a Hillary appointment makes a outrageous court decision.

That's fine. While we Catholics do feel we have a civic duty to put just leaders into office, we answer to Jesus Christ and if necessary, will persevere whether it's a phony-conservative like Bush or a demonic-liberal like Hillary in office. We answer to a higher power than the RNC.

ush has had a lot of other actions that were pro-life. For example, appointing Alito and Roberts, pushing for a partial birth abortion ban, blocking fetal stem cell research, etc. Why do those actions not count?

2 things: Bush has done the bare minimum. I know he's working against public opinion and must work within the confines of a pro-choice Congress, but he's played it safe as possible.

Second, I don't see how Bush gets off scot-free if he does two mildly pro-life things, then takes one-step back. Isn't the man supposed to be principled? If he's Mr. Pro-Life why does he contradict his beliefs part of the time?

The only thing you can really do to stop abortion, though, is to appoint prolife justices to the Supreme Court. If you expend your ammo in stopping Plan B, then you won't have it to use when it counts.

Personally I think people ought to use their limited time on earth convincing people not to have abortions, rather than wasting their energy trying to outlaw the procedure. Who cares if abortion is legal if nobody is doing it?

Why outlaw murder, rape, molestation, theft, drunkeness, drugs, etc? We should spend more time just convincing people not to do these things rather than waste time and capital outlawing and enforcing laws against these behaviors.

The argument in favor of abortion laws is that "a woman can do anything she wants with her own body". The things you mention are crimes against other people - or at least potentially against others in the case of drugs and alcohol - although some do use the same reasoning when they advocate legalization of marijuana.

The fallacy behind the "it's MY body" argument is that the fetus is NOT part of her body. It is more like a parasite that is totally dependent upon her for nine months for its protection and nourishment, but is genetically nonidentical to the mother. Although the fetus may share some genetic markers with the mother, it is a combination of the genetic information of both parents and is not exactly like either one. That's what we were getting at in our posts - you have to change the hearts of young women so that they come to realize that abortion is killing a living child, not just an inviable mass of tissue. The advent of 3-D sonograms is helping this a lot, but many very young girls that are pressured to have abortions have not ever seen such pictures or even had any exposure to child development. If they go through with the procedure and later find out the truth, they are very often devastated and overcome with guilt about what they have done.

Laws that require that women be told the whole truth prior to having an abortion and require a 24-hour waiting period would prevent many abortions. Under no circumstances should an abortion be legal beyond the first trimester. I would prefer that it not be legal at all, except to save the life of the mother, but IMO that is unrealistic after over 30 years of Roe vs. Wade. Since that decision was obviously unconstitutional, in an ideal world I would like to see it overturned and any decision about the legality of abortion left up to the states.

There used to be a saying in some pro-life circles concerning abortion but I think it was discarded because it encouraged militancy for the pro-life cause, something middle-America obviously does not have the stomach for. " If you believe it's murder then act like it's murder."

If a crazed Muslim man with an assault rifle is headed to a hospital nursery to kill all the 'infidel' babies, are we expected to sit around and debate his rightness or wrongness in doing so?

There should be zero tolerance for abortion in this country and anything that encourages it and demand that our elected officials respond accordingly. Why President Bush who claimed to be pro-life is supporting a morning after poisonous abortive pill is more than distressing.

Basically Yeah...  Did Jesus lead by example or was he a lobbyist?

The democrats will go for the entire stem cell package and partial birth abortion again. The hearts of people in this country have gone cold and they must be changed to stop this evil. Come Lord Jesus.

It seems there are people on this site who get checks every two weeks with RNC on the top right corner and blog consultant in the bottom left.

You are a troll.
