Restaurant Robbery Foiled By Gun-Packing Customer

August 18, 2006

INDIANAPOLIS -- An armed customer foiled a robbery at a fast-food restaurant on Indianapolis west side on Thursday afternoon, according to Indianapolis police.

Police said William McMiller Jr., 40, ordered a bucket of chicken before demanding money from a cashier and threatening to shoot at the KFC in the 2800 block of West 16th Street.

Police said the clerk didn't understand what McMiller wanted and thought he was asking for a refund.

Investigators said McMiller repeated his demand two more times before the clerk reached for money.

Investigators said that when McMiller began to climb over the counter, Paul Sherlock, a customer in the restaurant at the time, approached from behind and pulled out a Taurus 9mm handgun.

Sherlock held McMiller until police arrived. McMiller was held in the Marion County Jail on Friday. He faces a robbery charge.

Police later determined that McMiller did not have a gun, but did have a long screwdriver. Investigators said Sherlock has a valid gun permit.

LOL, that happens to me all-the-time. I get involved posting something, only to find that someone else beat me to the send key by a few seconds. That's what it looks like here, because both of these are only one or two posts apart.

Phreepin is Phun!

Well at least the reporter properly identified the handgun make model and caliber this time...

The fact that the owner of that firearm was licenced to carry is a great revelation to the story...

The fact that the suspect/perp (depending on what part of the country you are from) was not stupid enough to do anything more after the drop was made on them is probably a good thing as well...I'm sure it had the potential of going bad extremely fast and sure If Mr. Sherlock had had to discharge his weapon to stop any additional threat to anyone.

Sounds to me like Mr. Sherlock practiced great restraint in not discharging his weapon...

And the fact that no action was reported taken against Mr. Sherlock is a great thing!

I will drink a toast to Mr. Sherlock, and thank him for taking his responsibilities seriously!

If I ever failed in my responsibilities, it will be because I ran out of ammunition, but in that time my friends will have had a chance to get away and live.

Like I posted on the other thread, who wants to bet the KFC puts up a "No Guns Allowed" sign?

Customers with guns is just too much to tolerate. Why, some bad guy could get hurt and then they would get sued!!

Any takers?

Do you work for the association? Almost all of your posts ask this question or mention it. Just wondering.

You are probably right - but that won't stop criminals carrying screwdrivers from holding them up!

I guess the clerk's lack of English gave Sherlock time to draw!

I'm thinking about getting the new IN `lifetime carry permit' but at age 50 I'm trying to figure if the convenience is worth $100. $35 every four years, right? You gotta go through the ppwk, fingerprinting.
OK, let's say I make 70 ripe old years. Thats 20 divided by 4 (taking off my shoes, nib this, cipher that, carry the double-ought) $140 the old way, and the hassle of 4 renewals...
Why, you've talked me into it!

If you just carry, say, a double barrel shotgun instead of a handgun, you don't need to go through the paperwork registration.

"And this is important...why?"

To convey the immpression that concealed carry is a privilege and not a right.

Have you ever been to a KFC? If they do put up a "No Guns Allowed" sign, do I get to put up a "Get My Order Right" sign?

Methinks that the erstwhile Mr. Sherlock is a frequent customer there, and just planned on getting out with his chicken AND the cole slaw!

SHOULD READ: "approached from behind and pulled out a Taurus 9mm handgun, emptied the clip into the perp and ate chicken until police arrived"

"...ordered a bucket of chicken..."

Left out of the article, the supect's order was the 'Hillary Special'...two small breasts, two large thighs, and a Left wing.
