Gov. Rallies Faithful in Iowa (NM Richardson)

WATERLOO, Iowa— Democratic governors have pledged $1 million to Chet Culver's campaign for Iowa governor, New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson said Thursday.

Richardson, chairman of the Democratic Governors' Association, said getting Culver elected is a huge priority for the group. "We can't afford to lose Iowa," Richardson said.

He made the trip to Iowa to boost Culver's re-election bid and made a visit to the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines, a traditional stop for national politicos who come to the state.

Richardson also spoke to union activists at a rally in Waterloo and took part in another Waterloo event sponsored by a group critical of some of Wal-Mart's business practices.

The latter event was sponsored by WakeUpWalMart.com, a union-funded group that wants the company to boost its pay and employee health-care benefits.

Richardson has been careful to say he didn't attend to bash the corporate giant, the nation's largest private employer.

...Richardson praised the company for its environmental stewardship but said he'd "love to discuss with them how they can provide health insurance coverage for more of their employees."

Richardson said gridlock in Congress makes it important for Democrats to take control of governor's offices where they can.

He said the Democratic Governors' Association decided to invest heavily in Culver because he's run a strong campaign, and because the party wants to increase the number of governor's offices they hold to more than 25. ...

The visit to Iowa was the first this year for Richardson, who is mentioned as a possible candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination. "After the (2006) election, I'm going to make up my mind," Richardson, who is up for re-election this fall, said of any presidential hopes.

Richardson was courting a key Democratic constituency at the labor rally.

On Brit's panel last night all three (Fred, Mort and Nina) stated that it was a dumb move for the Dems to blast WalMart. They mentioned Gore giving the "Green" speech in front of a store , Terry Kerrey owning a million dollars of WMT stock and HRC being a former board member.

"Where in the world is Bill?" is even more difficult than "Where is Waldo?"

(Of course, it might be safer for New Mexicans if he devotes all of his time and energy on his failed Presidential bid.)
