GAZA (Reuters) - Palestinian gunmen kidnapped two foreign journalists working for the Fox News television channel in Gaza on Monday, a witness said.
The witness, a Palestinian who worked with the two journalists, said one of them, a producer, was an American, and the other, whose nationality he did not know, was a cameraman.
The Fox News bureau in Jerusalem said it was checking the report.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the abduction.
The witness said two vehicles blocked the journalist's transmission truck in the center of Gaza City and a masked man put a gun to the bodyguard's head, forcing him to the ground.
The kidnappers then sped away with the two journalists.
Similar incidents in the past in Gaza have ended with the release, usually within hours, of kidnapped foreign journalists or aid workers.
Many of the abductions were carried out by Palestinians pressing a grievance against the Palestinian government or its security forces
Sure, but there is not much to ping about.
Still praying, though.
7:23 PM FNCers Kidnapped In Gaza: CPJ Issues New Call For Centanni & Wiig's ReleaseThe Committee to Protect Journalists has issued a new statement about the kidnapping of two FNC employees. "Our concern for the safety and well being of our colleagues grows every day they are missing," CPJ Executive Director Joel Simon says. "We again call on those holding Steve Centanni and Olaf Wiig to free them at once. There can be no justification for the targeting of journalists, who are civilians, and who were in this case simply doing their jobs. Palestinian authorities must do everything in their power to help ensure the rapid release of these two journalists."
The CPJ's sources say the two journalists "were taken in a Mitsubishi Magnum pickup truck..."
7:20 PM FNCers Kidnapped In Gaza: Journo Says Palestinian Authority Has Info About Captors
"Fares Akram, who works in the same building as Mr Wiig, says the Hamas-led Authority has what it calls 'initial information' which could help find the journalists," The NZ Newswire says. "He believes the Palestinian Authority knows the identity of the captors and where they are holding the journalists. But he says the authority will not use force to free the journalists because this may endanger their safety."
Several NZ publications have repeated the claims. "I've seen those reports too but nothing's come through to us that changes the current situation," the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokesman says...
A few tidbits, but still nothing. Today, all day, for some reason I kept wondering if they were hungry.
If you want on or off, you know what to do.
I would like on. Prayers and best wishes for the families and friends of Olaf Wiig and Steve Centanni.
I am praying that it is true that the PA does know who has them...and that they are alive.
I was getting really worried..because it has been said that most of the terrorist groups take responsibility quickly.
Thanks for the update, semper.
Prayers up from Texas.
thanks for the ping
praying for them as we speak
Please add me. Can't find much on this for all the Ramsey coverage on now.
Thanks for the update. Prayers will continue.
You're added. There isn't much to be found, regardless of the fake confession by some twisted perv.
When any real news finally does break on these two men, it will be everywhere.
"fake confession by some twisted perv."
No kidding. The media will be sorry this guy took up more than his 15 minutes.
Brit Hume:
"..But we are encouraged and believe they have not yet been harmed, based on what we know."
It is as close to a direct quote as I can get.
Brit seemed to emphasize the word "yet"
Keep praying all.
I heard that too tonite on Fox. It gave me a chill, like he knew something.
It certainly sent a chill up my spine. God, I hope we are wrong.
Praying for their safety....
I'm cutting FOX some slack on this. It's one thing they can fill the time while they're in the "careful not to tick off the Palies" mode. I'm grateful for Centanni and the NZ cameraman they are watching what they say and report. I'm praying that it helps keep them alive.
Well said, Chena.
I hope we are too. Brit chilled me to the bone tonight as well.
My prayers continue to go up for the two of them. Who knows what is happening to them. I also continue to pray for their families. Thank you for the ping.
Thans for the ping...
Thank you for the ping. Still praying here too.
