Lebanon envoy: Truce will be Israel's last

Lebanon's UN ambassador bitterly slammed Israel's month-long bombardment of his country ahead of a hard-won truce, and vowed that the treaty would be Israel's last with any Middle East country.

"Lebanon will be, I think, the last state to sign a peace treaty with Israel," UN ambassador Nouhad Mahmoud told CNN television's "Late Edition" program. The diplomat added that the 15,000 Lebanese soldiers to be dispatched to south Lebanon to help keep the peace alongside a similarly-sized international UN force "are not going to use force" to disarm the Hizbullah militia which has been battling Israel. I'm still waiting for someone to point out the language in the agreement that says that Hezbollah is to be disarmed by the Lebanese.

Does the cease fire require those 15,000 soldiers to use force if Hezbollah fires upon Israel? Or is it Lebanon's right to just send the troops who will be no more than 'spotters' for the next volley of rockets?

Trying to discern if this statment is re-writing the conditions. At the very least it shows that Lebanon should not be viewed as innoncent if in the coming days Israel resumes attacks.

Remember. This is the "democratic government" that Bush has said deserves our support, not Hezbollah.

No, they haven't. This is OLD NEWS yet again.

This scenario, war, has been played over and over and over and over and over again since 1947.
Weapons have gotten meaner but since both sides have them the death tolls and destruction rise.
The Israelis can't use their U.S.-given-bought-nukes because they would be nuking their own lands, since they control it all. Way too close for nukes. They can't despoil their own with the fallout.

Nothing changes. War, death, destruction, cease-fire, clean-up, rebuild and it starts all over again.

You will read and see the exact same news in three years. The land of milk and honey.

How Jesus would weep to see his homeland. The Crusades should have succeeded. This wouldn't be happening if the Christians had won back and kept the Holy Land, as they had it since Roman times.

Hezbollah is not going to be disarmed. Lebanon is too weak to do it and the international community is not going to protect Israel. Israel needs to do the job itself.

what a setup - they agree to the ceasefire, but won't implement any of its conditions.

I can only agree to a point - It's not wise to believe that the 'fighting' will always stay at these levels - At some point, the pot of water will boil over. It may not be this year...but it will happen...

How dare you point out that the Lebanese government has fully integrated with Hizb. The regular crowd will shuffle in soon, hopefully asbestos fits you well. Good luck.

this is really a shame. For many years, Lebanon was a Christian nation. Then the muslims arrived, begining the Lebanese civil war, and they won, with support from Syria. For all intents and purposes, Lebanon has been "Syria lite" since the 1970s.

Get the cluster bombs and munitions ready. When the Muzzies stampede the border, let loose.

Has anything from the UN ever been any different? Working through them is a total waste of time and effort.
