The suspected terror plotters arrested in Britain had planned to conceal their liquid or gel explosives inside a modified sports beverage drink container and trigger the device with the flash from a disposable camera.
ABC News has learned exclusively that the plotters planned to leave the top of the bottle sealed and filled with the original beverage but add a false bottom, filled with a liquid or gel explosive.
This, they thought, would ensure that they would be able to pass through security -- even if they were asked to unseal and drink the beverage.
The flash in a disposable camera has enough electrical power, they apparently believed, to set off the homemade explosive.
There are any number of homemade or modified commercial liquids that would have made effective explosives, with enough energy to damage or destroy a plane.
If Reid had the common sense God gave a screwdriver, he would have used a lighter and gone to the bathroom.
And then, he would have succeeded.
"A friend suggested the following policy sometime ago:
1 All carry on items LOCKED in the overhead compartments at the beginning of the flight. No access by passengers during flight.
2 No more luggage on board. Ship it separately via ground or air.
Not so far fetched. Maybe eliminate all carry on items, period."
Not a bad idea. If it makes us safer, I say do it.
I said all carry on items locked away, that includes cell phones. That includes everything. But it is possible to have a timer, etc. So then just eliminate carry ons altogether.
Does this qualify for the Darwin Award?
Cordially,
Msjor LOL going on here!
A suggestion.....get and carry a signed letter from your doctor that describes your issue and needs.
Inform the airline prior to your flight.
Have a copy to give to airline staff on the plane.
I would bet that they will keep you well stocked in water.
I have to do something similar to insure I have oxygen for extended flights. They provide the oxygen and it is expensive....but it allows me the freedom to fly.
I also get taken through the airport, past the long lines, in a wheelchair and allowed to board the plane before the crowd gets on... ;>)
I can't think of a reason to ban clear bottles of plain water. An explosive would presumably not be clear and would definitely have a different viscosity.
Yes, and any other liquid. Which makes the "Taste before you board" idea typical of the know nothings at the TSA.
Jack Bauer would have drunk the suspect liquid ... from the bottom first.
Good Lord.
They have paper cups in the rest rooms. Help yourself. (Of course, drink that water at your own risk on some airlines.)
OMG ! Thats the first I've heard that...
I don't even know what to make of it anymore. They seem to be embedded in every vital "service" we have......they ARE everywhere.
It's got to stop.
I can't help but wonder how THEY plan to deal with liquid explosives being taken onboard in the form of a few suppositories?
At every opportunity, we need to do our best to remove every one of these bugs from the planet... as they will NEVER stop and sooner or later, they will get lucky again.
Ban Arabs from planes. Period. Should they ever decide to join the rest of the civilized world, maybe, just MAYBE we'll decide to trust them again. Until then, ban them from anything or anywhere that has people other than arabs within killing distance of them.
I've had it.
Season my dog's butt...he did that in one episode.
Correct you are!
They probably saw it in some Hollyweirdo movie.
Yippee!!
