Explosive Gel Was to Be Concealed in Sports Drink
ABC News. com ^ | 8/10/2006 | Richard Esposito

The suspected terror plotters arrested in Britain had planned to conceal their liquid or gel explosives inside a modified sports beverage drink container and trigger the device with the flash from a disposable camera.

ABC News has learned exclusively that the plotters planned to leave the top of the bottle sealed and filled with the original beverage but add a false bottom, filled with a liquid or gel explosive.

This, they thought, would ensure that they would be able to pass through security -- even if they were asked to unseal and drink the beverage.

The flash in a disposable camera has enough electrical power, they apparently believed, to set off the homemade explosive.

There are any number of homemade or modified commercial liquids that would have made effective explosives, with enough energy to damage or destroy a plane.

I just checked the date 8/10 on Wikipedia 610 - In Islam, the traditional date of the Laylat al-Qadr, when Muhammed began to receive the Qur'an.

I've noticed a trend of incidents around this date. Like the shootings in Seattle, a few years ago it was a child center in California, also Sudan bombings, the Sbarro pizza bombings in Jerusalem, etc. It really sticks out for me, not just because of the tragedies or near tragedies, but also because we have a few family birthdays around this date.

I have to carry a bottle of water with me constantly

Was kinda joking, but in this case, the airlines will have to provide the water. I see no problem in that.

Definitely the latter, and maybe the former. It doesn't take that much to blow a hole in the fuselage of an airplane--they're made of thin material, and the pressure differential up above 30,000 feet means the material's already under 6-9 psi of pressure depending on altitude.

Now, would that cause it to crash? Maybe, maybe not. There's at least two incidents I can think of where airplanes suffered huge inflight failures of parts of the fuselage and survived, both near Hawaii. There was a United 747 that had an improperly-sealed cargo door fail and tear a hole in the side of the fuselage, and an Aloha Airlines 737 that actually had the roof peel completely off over the first five or six rows of seats. Both planes landed safely, but both did have a number of injuries and a few deaths--I know the United plane had at least one flight attendant sucked out, not sure about the Aloha 737. (They made a TV movie about the 737 incident.)

It is not a certainty that an explosion in a jetliner would cause it to crash. That'd depend on where the bomb was, and how powerful it was. At the very least, it would kill or wound people nearby, and if the bomb was detonated when the plane was hundreds of miles out over the Atlantic? It might or might not be able to reach safety. I'd have to assume these people knew what they were doing and could make a bomb strong enough to give them a solid chance of fatally damaging a plane.

One problem, a remote trigger, such as a cell phone, can be used to detonate an explosive in the luggage or overhead compartments.

about 25 years ago, there was a ban on liquids aboard aircraft because of the nutjobs Castro sent over getting on aircraft and trying to hijack it with a bottle of gasoline.

All carry on items LOCKED in the overhead compartments at the beginning of the flight. No access by passengers during flight.

Since 9/11, I've wondered why all airlines didn't lock the overhead bins, or at least forbid access until the plane has landed. It's a no brainer.

I think they are smart enough not to kill their clients. Follow the $$$.

If they chose that route, then they would be in the same poor state that they were in when living in their mother country.

The fix for their Motherland: Send the leaders of their mother country packing and educated the women. Easy...

Oh, and do away with the Machismo.

Can't the same thing be done with baby formula in a bottle?

I only had it on for about 5-10 min. before I heard the story of one of them working at Heathrow in security. Unbelievable! This is like a cancer that's affected every system of your body, lymph, blood, brain, liver, colon...they're everywhere. I watched 'Obsession' last night....it's depressing.

You know, some of the people who have been convicted in America have been black Muslims or African Americans. Roger Hitchcock played the black panthers around Cinthia McKinney's antisemitic remarks today and seemed surprised. But Louis Farakhan has been spewing that kind of hate for 40 years. Unfortunately we have people who got caught up in it, and they are going to jail. My sympathy to their families. We do not do anybody a favor by being so PC that it continues.
