Acclaimed actor-comedian Robin Williams has checked himself into rehab to battle alcoholism.
According to "Access Hollywood," Williams' publicist announced the actor's decision to seek treatment.
"After 20 years of sobriety, Robin Williams found himself drinking again and has decided to take proactive measures to deal with this for his own well-being and the well-being of his family. He asks that you respect his and his family's privacy during this time. He looks forward to returning to work this fall to support his upcoming film releases."
No further details were made available.
Williams made his mark on the television sitcom "Mork and Mindy" before starring in a string of hit feature films, including "Good Morning, Vietnam," "Aladdin," "Mrs. Doubtfire" and "Dead Poets Society."
He won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in 1998 for the drama "Good Will Hunting."
Williams' recent roles include the hit family comedies "Robots" and "RV." He also starred in the thriller "The Night Listener" over the weekend, but the film faired poorly at the box office, opening in 10th place.

He can DT himself into a coma and I won't give a hang. He's just a left-wing retread junkie comedian who isn't funny.

Could be worse. His career could have descended to the Steve Martin level. Huh? What exactly is wrong with Martin's career? Doesn't have much trouble getting work, the last time I checked?

Yes, he definitely has very funny moments. That stuff is just way too clever for most people to get - the puns.

He found himself thinking about saying something bad about Jews - so this was a preemptive strike.

I read an article that stated that when Williams first entertained our troops, he made some anti-Bush jokes, which was met with silence. He stopped after that.

One of the best routines ever was Bill Cosby's "stop it" routine.

There are some who see parallels between his approach and that of Jonathan Winters.
***
From what I understand, Winters had been his idol for ages and I think they are now friends. Saw one interview with the two of them together at Winters' home. They were picking up everyday objects and doing whole routines around them...just off the top of their heads. No scripting. You have to have enormous talent to be able to do that.

I wish him well. He seems like a decent guy. He's a good actor. I can't stand his humor though. If he's on Leno or another show, I have to change the channel. Too wild, almost as if he took a fistful of speed.
you think he's bad on those, you should see out the "whose line is it?" shows he was on. at first he was funny.. then he took over the show. he's good, he's quick, he's funny.. but way too overbearing.

Williams Mocks Limbaugh, Drug Addiction
Posted by Noel Sheppard on July 1, 2006 - 12:05.
Fair warning for those that are sensitive to vulgarity, for this post will need to use some to properly quote the individual involved. Comedian Robin Williams was on the .Tonight Show. Thursday, and used the occasion to make fun of Rush Limbaugh.s recent Viagra incident. To be sensitive to those that might be offended, all obscene quotes will appear in the "Read More" section.
Now, to be fair, I am a huge Robin Williams fan, and believe him to be an equal opportunity offender. Even Rush, who has a fabulous sense of humor, likely would think this was funny (video link to follow).
With that in mind, host Jay Leno nicely set up Williams by asking for his opinion about the recent Viagra story concerning Limbaugh. Williams answered: "First of all, it seems a little redundant for him to take Viagra. You know, the fact that he takes it he gets taller. (audience laughter)"
Williams continued: "I mean, why do you need Viagra? It's a hard thing when he's a big prick already. (huge audience applause)"
Next, Williams moved on to more drug references: "Where was he staying in the Caribbean? Club Medicated?"
From there, the discussion moved into a homosexual theme after Leno mentioned that Rush was down there on an all boys vacation. Williams responded: "That's code. What do you need to take Viagra on an all boys vacation?"
Williams then suggested that Rush was in the Caribbean to go "fly-fishing" as he pretended to use his nether regions as a rod and reel.

I can't even imagine that. It would be like doing Love Me Tender to the tune of Knock Three Times. Just don't think about the tune to Knock Three Times, whatever you do.
