Neat thing about the 383 is that, although it's a big block, it has a stroke like a small block. It winds up real fast! Sure a 440 or a 454 might take it in a top end run, but that don't count in stoplight racing!
When I was in high school, my Grandparents had a 383 powered '69 Coronet wagon. One day Grandpa (after one too many shots of brandy) got a wild hair and got into a drag race with a kid in a '75 Firebird.
He beat him.
In front of his friends.
I saw the kid later that night drowning his sorrows. And of course his friends were comforting him in his defeat by saying things like:
"HAR! HAR! HAR! You got beat by an old fart in a STATION WAGON! HAR! HAR! HAR!
Hey! Let's get some of that fake wood like that old guy had and stick it on your car. Maybe it'll go faster! HAR! HAR! HAR!"
