In America, President Bush has denounced stem- cell therapy even for medical purposes as 'godless', vetoing any public funding,

This is an outright lie!

Bush vetoed embryonic stem cell funding, adult and umbilical funding is not affected.

Nor does this article acknowledge that the ONLY successes from stem cell research are those that DON'T involve embryos.

Exactly, before my wife gave birth recently, she and I got mail from several companies offering to preserve our child's cord stem cells as a backup, in case he ever needed some type of transplant. Obviously, they are legally permitted to do something other than turn those cells into Popsicles, or they wouldn't stay in business very long.

Why do they write articles that seem to be more intended to confuse than to enlighten? Right at the beginning it said the woman was going for umbilical stem-cell treatment, and then the rest of the article was about embryonic stem-cells. I don't think they ever really explained the difference.

It reminds me of something attributed to Winston Churchill "Many people use statistics the way a drunk uses a lamppost -- more for support than illumination."

Bush vetoed embryonic stem cell funding,

This isn't even true.

There is no allocated funding for creation of new human embryonic stem cell lines, but the NIH (via us US tax payers) is still actively funding (and requesting applications for) research on exisiting human embryonic cell lines.

"In America, President Bush has denounced stem- cell therapy even for medical purposes as 'godless', vetoing any public funding"

Andrea Thompson better get her facts straight. Bush and pro-life people have always supported adult stem cells (and umbilical cords and blood from them fall into the adult stem cell category). There is so much misinformation in the news media about stem cell research that it is not surprising the general public doesn't understand it. Of course, such misunderstanding works for the "give us death" crowd very well.
