Cokie Roberts Shocks George Stephanopoulos: Lamont Victory Disaster For Democrats
NewsBusters ^ | August 7, 2006 | Noel Sheppard

Posted on 08/07/2006 5:04:45 AM PDT by samtheman

Something amazing happened on ABC’s “This Week” Sunday: Cokie Roberts practically floored host George Stephanopoulos with the political truth that most impartial individuals already know (video to follow). The discussion centered on what it would mean for the Democratic Party if Ned Lamont beat Joe Lieberman in Connecticut next week. Stephanopoulos asked Roberts, “How did this happen?” After a somewhat lengthy explanation, Roberts said, “But it's, I think, a disaster for the Democratic Party, and it's going to be very interesting to see what happens as a result of it.”

"I think LIEberman will win also, but I'm hoping for Lamont because it WILL be the death of the Dems....:)"

New Quinnipiac poll has Lamont's lead down to six points but, like you, I hope that the Dems jump off their cliff and nominate Lamont.
Lieberman seems to have lost his "joementum".

he [ Bill Clinton] was a Democrat in the middle from the south with a very strong acquaintanceship with scripture.

I think Cokie's acquaintanceship with reality is tenuous...

Not really. She knows for certain that he's memorized the Six Commandments.

I have a question for those who follow Conn politics. Is there a chance for a Republican to win in November if Lamont wins the Dem nod and Liebermann runs as an Independent?

You are correct, it is absurd. I heard Bill Kristol say yesterday that Bush should fire Rummy and get Liebermann as SOD. Absurd is too mild a word.

Historians will look back at this era and be amazed by our insanity.

I doubt it. If the Dems get control again, the re-writing of history up to now will be insignificant in comparison to what they will do then. Historians will be amazed all right. They'll be amazed that the people allowed the evil, fascist Republicans to have the government for 12 years.

There is nothing like a Howard Dean meltdown in the cards., The election is tomorrow and the Dean meltdown occurred many weeks before the primaries ended.

Howard Dean did his Dean scream after his pitiful showing in Iowa. The MSM and the polls had him being much more competitive. Much of his "meltdown" was a MSM fiction, which then hurt him in NH. Dean was never as strong or the frontrunner as the MSM and polls made him out to be.

but what happens if Lieberman wins?

The Left wing fringe will lose their intimidation factor. They will either redouble their efforts or withdraw from participation and contributing. A third party could emerge.

Joe could be president. Our current CEO is absentee.

It already is. Lieberman is very liberal. He just seems so sane in comparison because he supports the WOT and he doesn't bark at the moon. But his tenure with AlGore showed how expedient his "principles" are.

I'm not savaging Joe. But just because he doesn't foam at the mouth, I don't consider him less liberal.

> heard yesterday, can't remember where -- probably FNC, that lots of new people were registering for the Dem primary

That is correct. According to local radio, 11,000 new registrations. They are saying the turnout is expected to be large, for a primary.

Liberals, like Joe, are few and far between nowadays. His type of liberalism, is a dying breed. The "liberals" of today are nothing less than communists in Gucci shoes..........

Very serious, Liberman may be all the things you stated, but if he loses he will still take around 40 -47% of the Dem primary in Conn. By offering him a cabinet position Bush rewards his loyalty on the War on Terror while demonstrating to those 40-45% voters that they have a home in the Republican party. This is very important with respect to the Jewish vote in Conn, NY, RI, Mass, NJ, and Del. I don't think the Dems can afford to lose a majority of any of their ethic block votes and do well nationally. If the NY Jews vote for a Republican President how would Hillary even have a chance of at winning??? "Strategery!!!"

My fearless prediction: Lieberman wins a squeaker tomorrow.

Maybe, but it would be far more entertaining for him to loose in the primary, then keep his seat as an independentin the general election in November. That would send a shock wave through the DUmmies, wouldn't it?

100% true. But Joe is still a big government, nanny stater liberal. In his defense, there are a fair number of Republicans in the Senate that are just about as liberal. So, I suppose from that point of view, he could be a Republican ;-)

You cannot be serious!!! Why would Bush want a whiny ass, not good for anything but talking, DEMOCRAT in his cabinet.....................?

Precisely!!

The thing I remember about the guy the most, was when during the Clinton impeachment hearings, he gave a speech on how immoral Clinton's behavior was, then voted against his removal.

He seems to like to be positioned on both sides of the argument, too often.

Not a man for the times.

Good for the Republicans; Lieberman will run as an independent and split the RAT vote. That's really the only way a Pubbie has a chance.

Not this pubbie. Alan Schlesinger has a gambling problem, has been kicked out of various casinos, and 2 NJ casinos had to chase him down to repay $20,000 in gambling debt. He's a complete nonentity polling single digits.

Lieberman winning virtually guarantees that the three CT Republican House members will win reëlection. They all have tight races right now, but if Lamont loses, Dem turnout will be several points lower (The RINO Gov wins this in a walk against either of the two boobs running in tomorrow's gubernatorial primary).

Cokie has called spades spades before among the Media and talking head elites.... While the press was trying to spin 94 into an anti-incumbent movement, she properly called an anti-democratic party route. Same thing on other events as well..

While I won't classify Cokie a conservative, she is at least honest when it comes to stating what she sees... she doesn't tout the line when what she personally sees doesn't match the story as its being presented. At least not on the sunday panels.

Bush is way to serious to do what you want. If the Jews don't support him just for how he is Israel's best friend and ally, well then, too bad.....he has many Jews in his admin. if that's all they want.
