Most Back Israel, Split on U.S. Role (Poll)

Most Americans consider Israel's bombing campaign in Lebanon justified, but they are divided about what role the United States should play in the crisis and how closely the nation should align itself with the Jewish state, a Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg poll has found.

The survey, conducted between Friday and Tuesday, also found that U.S. public opinion on the situation was evolving, with support for U.S. involvement in brokering peace rising steadily along with the death toll — particularly after Sunday's Israeli airstrike that killed dozens of civilians in the southern Lebanon town of Qana.

The poll found that nearly three in five respondents — 59% — backed Israel in the dispute that has now lasted more than three weeks, leaving hundreds dead and aligning much of the world in disagreement with the United States and Israel over whether to pursue an immediate cease-fire.

President Bush has resisted such an agreement until Hezbollah is disarmed and an international peacekeeping force can be assembled, a position that is generally in line with public sentiment in the United States, according to the survey. Of respondents, 13% backed an immediate cease-fire, while 45% said the United States should work toward both sides accepting an international peacekeeping force.

Comment from Poll:

"I feel badly for Israel. They don't run around looking for trouble, but they are constantly being harassed and attacked by Hezbollah," said Rick Poleck, 54, of Huntingdon, Pa., a poll respondent.

"Suppose this was Mexico and they were lobbing missiles into the United States. How long would we put up with that?" asked Poleck, a Republican who works as an engineer for a rural electric facility. "How do you defeat a terrorist enemy without [people] getting hurt?"

This simply can't be.

When I tried to explain to a liberal yesterday that the firm stance of Bush via Rice was true leadership as opposed to a lack of leadership, he raved that 99% of the world besides far right extremists were deeply questioning Israel's lack of restraint and the whole disproprtionality rubbish, blah, blah, blah...

when this is rightfully viewed as part of the counteroffensive to global jihad there is nothing to question or debate. ("War on Terror" connotes that WE are the aggressor)

If the traitorous media gets their way, they'll spin this story over time until they finally break down the spirit of ignorant Americans into believing that Israel is "going too far",the way they've managed to convince unaware Americans that Iraq is a mistake or a quagmire. They'll just keep chipping and insinuating, until they've convinced the ignorant. I hope and pray that I'm completely wrong and that Americans will think for themselves on this one,and draw the only possible conclusion-that Israel is in a fight for its survival, and that they're also the only bulwark the world has on the front line of holding back the Islamofascist tide.

Israel has never wanted war or death to any people. Islam is a belief with a death wish, and it is by martrydom that they can get their 72 virgins, so they welcome death (so they say themselves, and they even wish it upon their children. Muslim countries do not want their superstitions changed.

The glue that holds the Muslims together is hate. They haven't contributed one single positive thing to this world, and I think that they must know it. They resent the world because they are primitive superstitious losers who serve no purpose on this planet. Cockroaches have more right to take up space on Planet Earth than they do,at least cockroaches don't want to murder or enslave everyone who's not a cockroach. If the Islamopigs could ever manage to accomplish their goal-to murder everyone until they could take this world into the dark ages with themselves, then they'd begin to eat their own, because if they're breathing, they're killing. I wish the world would get a clue and realise that these people have nothing to live for, can't make anything of their own countries, and resent the outside world for their inferiority complex, and want to just kill us all so they won't have to be shown up for the neanderthals that they are.Actually, neanderthals were advanced compared to them.

Ok then algebra. Let's see--on one side of the scale,algebra--on the other side, centuries of mayhem and murder,a declared jihad on the civilised world, and a culture of killing, including in the most barbaric ways. The scales are waaaay imbalanced, and not in their favor. (Not slamming your point, just pointing out the discrepencies in their contribution to the world, when compared to all the havoc they've wreaked and the hate upon which they thrive.)
