LOS ANGELES - The movie that could be the most important of Mel Gibson's career is one that may never be released if the actor and law enforcement authorities prevail.
But at least one media outlet is seeking access immediately to the potentially explosive video and audio of Gibson's drunken driving arrest.
The visual and audio record could add fuel to the controversy over Gibson's anti-Semitic tirade at a deputy who pulled him over and his self-described belligerent behavior toward deputies when he was brought to a sheriff's station in the early morning hours of July 28.
TMZ, an Internet celebrity news site which first released leaked sections of Gibson's booking report, maintains the tapes should be seen and heard by the public to assess whether the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department gave Gibson preferential treatment.
"We want the tapes not just because of Mel Gibson but because the tape puts the conduct of the Sheriff's Department in context," said Harvey Levin, head of TMZ. He said he had learned that the deputy who arrested Gibson radioed ahead to the station that someone should be prepared to videotape the scene because of Gibson's behavior.
"From what I understand, the deputies were very excited because Mr. Gibson was there," Levin said Thursday. "The tape may show them gathering around to peer at him."
Los Angeles' leading First Amendment lawyers said it will be an uphill battle to obtain the tapes before the case is resolved.
Attorney Douglas Mirell predicted authorities would invoke the investigative records exemption to the California Public Records Act, which is the single most litigated exemption...."

Where was this "one media outlet" when Hillary was spewing at the mouth about F'N Jew bastards?
His most important movie already was released. But anything to get the attention off of its truth onto something else.
But you can also just pick up a Bible and read what Jesus actually did!
None of us are perfect. If I want to see ugly anti-semitism, I'll read the NYT. If I want to hear ugly racist comments, I'll listen to Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson.
Mel's incident is utterly unimportant.
I think the Hillary incident in private quarters or an office.
There was no Video Tape at the time.
True and if he were a Muslim or a Leftist this story would have been buried after the second apology.
It sure won't be released if the arresting cop provoked him......or if he had just learned that Disney cancelled his holocause movie. If it's NOT released, that will say something.
funny how nobody is focusing on this. Am I the only one who thinks this was out of line? Almost like a set up? Maybe a way to videotape a drunken and vulgar Mel Gibson and then sell it to the tabloids?
I once said something REALLY stupid when I was drunk...
...Very freaking stupid...
I'm not gonna' fault the guy...
"True and if he were a Muslim or a Leftist this story would have been buried after the second apology."
If he were either no apology would have been required.
And they say that stuff when they're (ostensibly) sober.
Mel had to be tanked before he would spout off.
Theodore Boutrous? IS he related to Boutrous Boutrous Ghali or whatever Kofi Anus' predecessor was called?
No one alive remembers any video cameras recording that.
No...you aren't the only one. I think the jewish cop POSSIBLY provoked him. His diatribe made NO SENSE said to a Chinese man (like was first reported)....and then the fact of his being Jewish didn't come out for two days and has NEVER been mentioned again makes me go ...hmmmmmm. The story against Mel would have been even UGLIER had the fact he said this to a Jewish cop, so why hide that fact for two days...it sure wasn't to shield Mel from any embarrassment.
It's nothing more than MSM's attempt to drive a wedge in, and reduce the support Israel has from the Christian community. If it was a Kennedy, it would be swept under the rug like "Patches" little incident was.
Appears that H'weird MSM is crucifying ole Mel in the press. Perhaps because he made billions on "The Passion" and H'weird is unforgiving because he wouldn't kowtow to the uglies that be that rule H'weird.
And I want Harvey Levin to make public who his tipster was on this story. Could it have come from 'someone' in the Sheriff's office named Wee? 'Someone' who had an ax to grind and knew just who might make the biggest stink about it? That might put TMZ's conduct in the use of this story in context as well.
