Tamil Tigers sympathizers in New York accused of terror support
NEW YORK
Supporters of the Tamil Tigers rebel group in Sri Lanka sought to have the group removed from a list of terrorist organizations and to obtain classified intelligence by bribing U.S. officials, authorities said Monday.
In a sting, detailed in a newly unsealed criminal complaint, undercover agents posing as U.S. Department of State officials were offered millions of dollars during a series of secret meetings in an apartment on Staten Island.
At a meeting in July 2005, one defendant asked undercover agents whether they "could stop the United States government from sending arms to the Sri Lankan government" and "provide intelligence about this issue," the complaint said.
Another "made it clear that he had traveled to the United States on behalf of (the Tamil Tigers') senior leadership in Sri Lanka," including the group's founder, the complaint said.

Italian minister calls meetings with Jews, Muslims after Islamic ad on Lebanon
ROME
Italy's interior minister on Monday convened separate meetings with Jewish and Muslim leaders after an Islamic group took out full-page newspaper advertisements likening the Israeli attacks on Lebanese guerrilla targets to Nazi massacres.
"Yesterday, Nazi massacres, today Israeli massacres," read the ads Saturday by the Union of Islamic Communities (UCOII), an Italian Muslim group with a reputation for radicalism.
