Godzilla Observations
So far the cease fire is holding. However, Hezbollah will not be disarmed; therefore this war will have to be refought again in the near future, especially if Iran continues to be a global threat. I suspect that if this cease fire holds out long enough, within a month there will be a no-confidence vote and Olmert, et al, will be out of a job, with Bibi Netanyahu taking over.

Rocket Summary
Israeli officials estimate that since the onset of the conflict, 3,970 rockets landed on Israel, 901 of them in urban areas. 2,015 people were hurt in the various attacks, 1,318 of them victims of shock, killing 52 civilians. More than a thousand rockets landed in the Kiryat Shmona area, 808 rockets landed near Nahariya, 471 near Safed, 176 near Carmiel, 106 near Akko, 93 in the Haifa vicinity and 81 near Tiberias.

Winners and Losers
Winner – Iran / Syria / Hezbollah : Their defensive tactics of utilizing modern ATGMs took the superiority of the IDF armor away from them. They planned and stockpiled carefully for a war where they would face intense bombardment and developed control along the lines of a chain of command. Secondly, even after the IDF attained their limited goals yesterday, they still managed to pump a record 250+ rockets into Israel.

Losers – 1. Israel: The country looks weak, both through its waffling non-performing government but in the inability of the IDF to shut down the rockets.
2. IDF: The IDF suffered high causalities as a result of the Olmert “Red Light – Green Light” military campaign decisions. Hamstrung by Olmert, the IDF was denied one of its most powerful tools in its military arsenal – speed and shock. Having to attack in an essentially piecemeal fashion played right into Hezbollah’s hands. Furthermore, there is a rift between the air force and ground forces because the Chief of Staff is an air force general and the war was attempted to be fought only from the air, with little consideration to the ground requirements.
3. Olmert and his coalition government: When the going got tough, he bailed and left the IDF holding the (body) bag(s). I think the US pushed the cease fire only AFTER it was shown that Olmert was a military buffon, totally incapable of directing this war, and the US saw that damage control was necessary. Never in the history of Israel has it been given such a blank check to deal with an islamic terrorist organization by not only the world but arab countries in particular. And never in Israel’s history have they bungled such an opportunity.

IDF Ground Offensive
As the dust has now been allowed to settle, I am a bit under whelmed by the very limited advancement on the ground that the IDF attained. Most action reported continues in villages supposedly behind the IDF lines, near the border, further muddying up where the front is. It appears that they attained the Litani River only in a marginal sense, the eastern portions where it was the closest to the border. They appear not to have even come close in the west. At most, they appear to have occupied the UN buffer zone. There were no significant advances across the Litani in the north. They did appear to have secured the southern side of the crossing in the vicinity of Frun. The map depicts (in Green) the approximate final position of the IDF incursion into Lebanon available to me from open sources. I’ll keep monitoring the sites to see if I can get this cleared up some more, particularly in the western areas. .

IAF Activity
The air embargo is still reportedly in place; however the cease fire appears to be holding.

Hezbollah
Having declared victory, the rocket attacks are currently silent. There have been a couple of incidents where Hezbollah guerrillas have provoked IDF, in both cases the Hezbollah terrorists were killed.

IDF reporting about a dozen Katyusha rockets hitting southern Lebanon in the last hour or two. CNN reporter wondering aloud if it means that portions of Hezbollah are refusing cease-fire, and if IDF has pushed them far enough north to keep Israel out of range.

Salem Bombs Were All Attached to Cars

Police reveal that the two bombs found on the ground actually fell off cars they had been attached to.

(SALEM) - Salem Police are releasing more information on last week’s pipe bomb incidents in Salem and Dallas. It now appears that all four bombs were attached to cars owned by south Salem residents.

Two of the pipe bombs were found on the ground; one in the parking lot at Roth’s IGA on Lancaster Drive NE, and one at the intersection of Woodland Drive and Jon Mart in south Salem.

One was discovered attached to a car in a Salem Hospital parking area, and the fourth bomb was found attached to a car at the TYCO Electronics factory in Dallas.(snip)

Afghanistan man caught at border

Man being interrogated by FBI

HIDALGO - A man from Afghanistan was caught trying to enter the United States illegally.

Federal sources confirm 30-year old Hamid Majidzada from Afghanistan tried to enter the country by crossing the Rio Grande River.

Border Patrol agents say the Afghan man was caught a mile east of the Hidalgo International Bridge. He came up through the riverbank and was greeted by federal officers.

Hidalgo Police Chief Vernon Rosser says everything is being done to make sure people from suspicious countries are caught.

Rosser wasn't notified by any agencies about the arrest, but he says he believes this shows the man wasn't a threat.

"We do have information shared if there is a need to know. You have to remember most intelligence is shared on a need-to-know basis," the police chief says.

The FBI tells NEWSCHANNEL 5 they've found no ties connecting the Afghan man with terrorists at this time.

We wanted to know how a man who doesn't speak Spanish crossed through Mexico.....(SNIP)

Security services in Italy are keeping under surveillance some 13,664 potential terrorist targets and have deployed some 19,559 operatives to do the job, the Interior Ministry announced on Monday. 15 held in Pakistan as scale and intricacy of threat is revealed

Up to 50 people across the world may have been part of the alleged conspiracy to explode bombs on planes heading from Britain to the United States, it emerged yesterday.
