Was Qana Staged? Cont'd [Jonah Goldberg]
A giant banner denouncing Rice and the "Qana massacre" might have been made a bit too quickly.

I don't want to get too far out ahead on this, but I know we've got a zillion printer-type folks among our readers. Do you guys think such a banner could be made in 2-4 hours (particularly in a supposedly war-ravaged area)?

Update: From a reader:

"Do you guys think such a banner could be made in 2-4 hours (particularly in a supposedly war-ravaged area)?"

Heck no. A designer could throw it together in probably 15 minutes or so, but the longest part would be the printing. Notice how deep the reds and blacks are - this means they didn't just bust it out. I wouldnt be surprised if that job itself (requiring special equipment, as it looks to be printed on canvas or nylon, not merely paper) took 6 hours simply to print.

Also, that puppy would be expensive.

Update II: From a reader:

Nope. Not possible in 2 hours to design, typeset, print, assemble and transport to the site. 24 hours if you're really good to do all the above. I say that as an career commercial artist of 18 years now.

Update III: From another reader:

called a close friend who has a very large printing company in NY with the question.  he called out to one of his technicians as to how long a color 30 foot banner would take to produce.  the response was that it would have to be done by a special machine and that machine would take "5 to 6 hours."     by the way, their rather enormous, state of the art (less than 6 months old) facility doesn't even have the equipment necessary to do it.  so make a guess as to what's available in a war-ravaged area...

No, one of the blog links said that, the photo itself says Beirut.

Since Jonah uses both conflicting links as citations it would seem he loses some credibility.

But since stlnative has proven over and over that these machines have the capacity to print such a large banner in minutes, and that it's established it was in Beirut and not Qana, it's entirely possible.

I choose to leave the conspiracy theories to the moonbats.

It does not depend on an exact order. For instance if the banner could be printed as fast as some suggest it could be layed out on a computer and stored for the time. Fewer know the story that way.

Also you notice the man in the helmet and vest doing most of the body display. Fewer to know the state of the bodies and comment on that, (Why are they not crushed and bloody?).

They could have planned, in general, a Qana incident without picking a particular building. They are Shooting Rockets in the area and the Israelis cream a building, which does not fall. Instead of being alarmed they use the opportunity to load bodies, alive or dead, into the place and blow it up.

Then the photo op, banner and all the rest or other possible variation.

At the sign company I worked at we produced large format inkjet banners for billboards and other specialty signage. I'm talking 10'-20' x whatever roll length. The banners are printed on Flexface (reinforced vinyl). Which, from far away looks thinner and more supple than it really is. But, to support a banner of that size, the material needs to be very strong. A billboard company would stock the flexface and could presumably have much of the graphics done ahead of time, but there is still the issue of what you did in advance. I mean, are you "planning" on an incident where heavy civilian casualties give you an opportunity like this?

Apparently you need to brush up on your "printing/computer" skills. All those things are readily available over the Internet.

as far as who paid for it it's irrelevant. And Hezbollah probably has enough in their budget.

Hezbolla knows, they fire rockets, Israelis target the location. Not too difficult to purposefully launch from a spot and be ready to exploit the results.
I also read the mass grave burial for the victims there was mention of people covering their mouths/noses because of the stench of the dead. Would recently dead (burial next day) be stinking already? Sorry to be gruesome.

No it would not. Another item that is not reasonable.

Watch out for the Lefties, Democrats and terrorists to start calling the accusations being made of the Hezzies staging a massacre sick and perverted !

Of course many of them have no problem believing that George Bush and the CIA delibertly planned and executed the 9/11 attacks so Halliburton could make more money - but they have trouble believing that an avowed terrorist group could have staged this????

Someone invented the very descriptive word, Hezbollywood

Do they have the big group dance before or after blowing up?

I found this...

PRODUCT DETAILS

• Printed on durable 13 oz. matte white vinyl or 9 oz. mesh vinyl
• 3M solvent-based UV inks won’t fade for years
• High-resolution printing for stunning results
• Offered in 1-ft. increments to 16’ x 100’
• Larger sizes are available (multiple panels sewn together)

Banner Printing Guidelines

Banners have file different file preparation guidelines than offset printing. Please follow these steps when you are setting up your document to print a banner.

1. Set your document size including bleed

Scale your file to 12 to 1, so that 1 inch equals 1 foot. (1"=1') and add .125” bleed on each side. Thus a 4' x 6' banner would be submitted at 4.25" x 6.25"

2. Establish the safety area

Do not place important elements too close to the trim line as they could be trimmed off or sewn through during finishing. It is best to keep key elements of your banner .125” inside the edge.

If your banner uses pole pockets, put all text and design elements at least .33" inside of the cut line or they may be sewn through.

3. Choose your resolution

The required resolution for printing vinyl banners depends on viewing distance.

From five feet or less, submit at 1200 dpi
From five feet or more, submit at 900 dpi
From 10 feet or more submit at 600 dpi
From 50 feet or more, submit at 300 dpi
For example, banner that is 10’ x 20’ and viewed from 10 feet away must be printed as a 10" x 20" file at 600 DPI, or a total of 6,000 x 12,000 pixels. The same vinyl banner for viewing from 5 feet should be printed at 1200 dpi, or a total of 12,000 x 24,000 pixels for a 10" x 20" file.

Technical Name for this type of banner is:
Digital Vinyl Banner

Matte PVC vinyl banner material is great for indoor or outdoor use. Mesh vinyl is particularly well suited to outdoor use with very large banners or windy conditions

It doesn't really work that way.
Also, the print speeds given are going to be under ideal conditions.
These are very large high-res images that are ripped to the printer. Ripping a large file takes time above and beyond the print time.
That said, the banner is displayed near where it was printed so that saves time. The graphics layout can be done quickly but still takes time. But from what I understand there was a laspe of hours between the actual bombing and when the rescuers (and media attention) arrived on the scene. In fact on Fox there was some discussion of the big delay in the rescue efforts.

Good morning.
"I choose to leave the conspiracy theories to the moonbats."

So are you saying that you and stlnative don't buy the theory that the Cana bombing is a Hezbollah propaganda exercise? That the Israelis either did it on purpose or did it accidentally while indiscriminately bombing civilian areas, or, are you limiting your skepticism to the production of the banner?

Thanks, I didn't know when the first Qana incident was. (I was in a fugue state for most of the Clinton years, couldn't bear to watch until the unavoidable Lewinsky mess began.)

Now that I look closer, all the Arabic font on that banner looks too even, considering the vertical wrinkle in the banner itself. There isn't any distortion to the s in "Rice," the last letter just before the exclamation points.

The banner could have been produced in the time frame given, with a certain degree of readiness (an open slot in your production schedule for starters). As I said in a previous post, Hezbolla knows their launchers will be targeted. So launch from where you want an Israeli airstrike and voila, civilian casualties to exploit. Whether dead were brought from another location, or women and children purposefully not evacuated is another matter.

see post 154 on how simple it is to set the picture for banner printing. Any one that knows how to print photos out at home can follow these instructions.

As far as the graphics, all they had to do is add in the Qana wording to the graphic that was already in the works for another Condi/Hezzie propaganda project.
