Mel Gibson Seeks Rehab: Actor Enters Unnamed Treatment Center
ABC News ^ | 7/31/06 | Buck Wolf

July 31, 2006 — Mel Gibson has reportedly sought rehab treatment, three days after he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

"He is in a program of recovery at this time," Gibson's spokesman, Alan Neirob, told Star magazine.

The 50-year-old Oscar-winning director and actor was arrested Friday in Los Angeles. Law enforcement officers said they clocked him doing 87 mph in a 45 mph zone. A breath test indicated Gibson's blood-alcohol level was 0.12 percent, sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said. In California a driver is legally intoxicated at 0.08 percent.

While it's not known where Gibson will be treated, Chris Printiss, the co-founder of celebrity treatment center Passages in Malibu, said he's aware of Gibson's plans.

"I understand he has gone to a treatment center," he told the magazine. "The center that I've heard he's checked himself into follows the Alcoholics Anonymous 12-step program. And I don't believe that will help him."

"He needs individual intense therapy by a team of people who know what they are looking for in causes in alcoholism."

Earlier on Monday, Malibu officials were defending the handling of Gibson's arrest amid allegations the department covered up anti-Semitic remarks Gibson reportedly made while he was in police custody.

The allegations of anti-Semitism stem from a leaked arrest report posted on the Web site TMZ.com quoting Gibson as saying, "The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world," and asking a deputy, "Are you a Jew?"

"This case is going to go to the district attorney," Whitmore told reporters. "In that case file will be his statement, will be our report, will be everything pertinent to his blood-alcohol level. We have done our job. We hope we've done it with not only professionalism and intelligence, but held to the highest standard. of legal and moral imperative."

Whitmore said county prosecutors will decide the next step after a review of the case, but that the Sheriff's Department was "convinced because of our investigation and because of his own self-illuminating statement that he will be convicted of driving under the influence."

Agreed Gretchen.

I thought the press over emphasized his father's statements and beliefs, but it now appears they were not as far off as I thought.

I still feel for Gibson - we all have our sins, I sure have mine. But, it is very hard to see someone I admired fall so hard.

That doesn't excuse his behavior, but it certainly explains why we're seeing (and will see) so many people piling on Mel, because deep down they resent him and despise him for what he's done for the cause of Christ, and now it's PAYBACK time. Mel is in my prayers, and will remain there. Because "there but for the Grace of God, go I, or You, or ANYone".

I agree with what you posted.

Why would you say that?

Maybe the 'Passion crowd' is just the right folks to go to....

..they will be praying for him.

Mel has always seemed a little off to me. Actually, quite a bit off. He has a sort of tick when he is interviewed and definitely seemed to have some anger management issues much earlier than this.

That said, I like his movies & think he basically is trying to be a decent man and hope he gets help fighting his demons. And I thank GOD no one has been around to videotape any of my drunken episodes (though there may be a few snapshots around somewhere...).

As has been said, .12 is hardly roaring drunk, and the fact that he was driving twice the speed limit tells me he was dealing with something else that night that had put him in a wreckless state of mind; a fight with his father, maybe...or an exceptionally ugly bit of fan mail. Really, who can say?

No one who was not anti-Semitic would say what Mel said, no matter how drunk.

Very different from "f***ing Jew b*****d", which is at least arguably simply a profane angry outburst that expresses anger at an individual without necessarily condemning a group (not to defend it, but simply to distinguish it). An amusing example is in the Producers, when Max calls his partner "fat", not because he harbors prejudice toward fat people, but because he is mad, and just looking for any characteristic of the individual to pick on.

Right. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking.

A drunk doesn't have to be a practicing Christian or a backslider or even a believer. The program takes care of all of it, for Protestants, Catholics, Jews, Buddhists, agnostics, atheists, whoever can grasp the concepts and makes even the most rudimentary attempts to practice them.

God is front and center - we just can't let that ever keep someone away who needs what AA has to offer, IMHO.

Always thought Mel was hot, but I gotta rethink that, I guess.

Look at that mug shot in the other thread. Seems like he's still hot, even under the worst circumstances.

Who came across as the biggest anti-semite last week? Drunken Mel or NBC's reporterette Ann Curry?
My guess is that they came in to a photo finish.

Maybe you're right. IF so, they'll have to reconcile these types of remarks...

quoting Gibson as saying, "The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world," and asking a deputy, "Are you a Jew?"

Get Real, the "Passion" crowd knows what the movie "the Passion of Christ " was all about. The "Passion" Crowd Understands that we all sin,and that we seek forgiveness. Mel Gibson is entitled to REDEEMPTION.

Mel's Alcoholism may be addressed in a ReHab center and Mel may not drink again. However, his feelings about Jews will not be cured.

I agree, but maybe he'll work on that too. Or maybe not.

I feel burned by Gibson - I thought the TMZ report was part of the continuing payback by the Left for his making "The Passion" - so I defended him on this forum, at least until more sources for the story from more qualified sites came out.

Mel might also use this as an opportunity to throw out (what another FReeper put so eloquently) the demons instilled by his father. I sure hope he does that. But I won't trust him or his support his cinematic vision again. Not that he needs my meager money anymore....
