July 31, 2006 — Mel Gibson has reportedly sought rehab treatment, three days after he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
"He is in a program of recovery at this time," Gibson's spokesman, Alan Neirob, told Star magazine.
The 50-year-old Oscar-winning director and actor was arrested Friday in Los Angeles. Law enforcement officers said they clocked him doing 87 mph in a 45 mph zone. A breath test indicated Gibson's blood-alcohol level was 0.12 percent, sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said. In California a driver is legally intoxicated at 0.08 percent.
While it's not known where Gibson will be treated, Chris Printiss, the co-founder of celebrity treatment center Passages in Malibu, said he's aware of Gibson's plans.
"I understand he has gone to a treatment center," he told the magazine. "The center that I've heard he's checked himself into follows the Alcoholics Anonymous 12-step program. And I don't believe that will help him."
"He needs individual intense therapy by a team of people who know what they are looking for in causes in alcoholism."
Earlier on Monday, Malibu officials were defending the handling of Gibson's arrest amid allegations the department covered up anti-Semitic remarks Gibson reportedly made while he was in police custody.
The allegations of anti-Semitism stem from a leaked arrest report posted on the Web site TMZ.com quoting Gibson as saying, "The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world," and asking a deputy, "Are you a Jew?"
"This case is going to go to the district attorney," Whitmore told reporters. "In that case file will be his statement, will be our report, will be everything pertinent to his blood-alcohol level. We have done our job. We hope we've done it with not only professionalism and intelligence, but held to the highest standard. of legal and moral imperative."
Whitmore said county prosecutors will decide the next step after a review of the case, but that the Sheriff's Department was "convinced because of our investigation and because of his own self-illuminating statement that he will be convicted of driving under the influence."

Mel is one of my favorites.
But to face it all, along with your arrest, terrible behavior, despicable statements, and all the humilation - has to be worse than anything I can imagine.
I have prayed for the guy. I really like him. If he had just been arrested for DUI - that would be one thing. His statements against the Jews was just over the top for me - and I still cannot believe it.

I'm guessing, but the speaker's point may be that Mel's religious views may be incompatible with the spiritual core of the AA program but are so strongly held that he wouldn't be able to let go and go with the program. I'd have to know a lot more about Mel and his core beliefs to evaluate whether the comment is correct or not. Just with what little I know the fact Mel has a strong belief in a higher power already should be a plus to him accepting the AA program. Dunno.
Hey, where are all the yapping media heads who were PRAISING 'Patches' Kennedy when he went into rehab after crashing his car into that barracade near the U.S. Capitol?
When Patches did it, it was "heroic", "courageous", blah-blah-blah, why isn't it the same way for Mel Gibson?
This is just another example of the hypocrisy that plays out in the media, in the public, and the only difference here is that Mel produced and distributed one of THE most powerful films in modern times, which has contributed to many people coming to know Christ as Saviour.
That doesn't excuse his behavior, but it certainly explains why we're seeing (and will see) so many people piling on Mel, because deep down they resent him and despise him for what he's done for the cause of Christ, and now it's PAYBACK time.
Mel is in my prayers, and will remain there.
Because "there but for the Grace of God, go I, or You, or ANYone".
Anyone who truly understands the message of "The Passion of the Christ" will understand God has just as much grace for a penitent Mel Gibson as the penitent thief who hung on the cross next to Christ.
When record promoters tried to tell Johnny Cash they wouldn't promote an album of him performing live at Folsom Prison, saying his audience was Christians who wanted to hear him sing gospel, and they wouldn't buy a record made at a prison, Cash said (paraphrase), "Then they aren't really Christians."

Oh, yeah, that's right - AA wouldn't have any idea about what alcoholics need to recover. Celebrities don't have to do what the "common" people do - they're "special."
Which is exactly the first thing AA will help him tackle - "terminal uniqueness." Somehow, I get the feeling that Passages seeks to enhance that character defect.
Oh well. It takes what it takes.
