Since my initial comments, Gibson has come out with another apology which I am more willing to accept, depending upon his future actions (perhaps donating some time and effort assisting Jewish victims of Islamic terrorism). NOT a monetary donation. He isn't buying his way out of this.

None of what I said is "speculative" on my part, except that it's about Mel Gibson, whom I do not know.

Interesting that the police apparently wrote verbatim in their report the things Mel said. Doing that must be a judgement call of the officer in charge, I don't think it's a routine or SOP thing to do, unless the subject was overtly resisting arrest or something similar.

"I consider it perfectly acceptable to hate those who hate you. In fact, it's a survival trait."

Unfortunately for you then, God doesn't. Hate is never OK, defend yourself? Absolutely, but never hate.

43 You have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbor, and hate thy enemy. 44 But I say to you, Love your enemies: do good to them that hate you: and pray for them that persecute and calumniate you
Matthew 5:43-44

Then there are those who will: 6..rush to forgive him so quickly that it will make your head swoon.

I suspect they are mainly women who fantasize about him.

Just to set the record straight, I am not the one who stated, "I consider it perfectly acceptable to hate those who hate you. In fact, it's a survival trait." I was responding that statment in my #155.

Hate is never OK, defend yourself? Absolutely, but never hate.

It is true, as far as I can tell, that people should never be the object of our hatred. But hating evils deeds, as opposed to the people who commit them, is good, and in fact an obligation.

Romans 12:9
Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil; cling to what is good.
Revelation 2:6
'Yet this you do have, that you hate the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.

Cordially,

I agree. It would be impossible anyway for money to fix a problem that is not monetary in nature. If the apology is sincere he will do his part to make amends. Whether or not the victims of Mel's remarks accept his amends is a different story, but the amends will be evidence of a changed heart.

One of my favorite poster boys of amends is Zacchaeus. His amends did happen to be monetary in nature, because of the nature of his offenses, but the principle is the same. Zacchaeus was willing to go even to point of a very undignified climbing of a tree, and beyond, and I hope Mel Gibson can humble himself enough to be willing, as Zacchaeus did, to go to whatever length is necessary to make his amends.

Luke 19

Zacchaeus the Tax Collector
1Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. 2A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. 3He wanted to see who Jesus was, but being a short man he could not, because of the crowd. 4So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way.

5When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today." 6So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly.

7All the people saw this and began to mutter, "He has gone to be the guest of a 'sinner.' "

8But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, "Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount."

9Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. 10For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost."

Cordially,

I have no evidence that people say things they do not believe when they are at 12 BAC nor do I believe that people should be excused for things simply because they are drunk.

However, if you are of the opinion that people should be forgiven for their actions while drunk you will have to open up the prison gates and return millions of criminals to the streets.

As for me, I will not buy a Dixie Chick CD or see another Gibson movie however, I will still continue to have friends that hold the same opinion about Bush as the Dixie Chicks. Most importantly, I will do not and will not have friends that are racist of Antisemitic.

One real simple question:

How does one hate that which he worships?

His so-called "anti-semite tirade" is more complex than what the media cares to elaborate...with their 15 second soundbite modus operandi. And I have written exhaustively on this complexity on FreeRepublic, but this forum seems to reflect the same low tolerance for comprehensive explanations.

I have concluded that Mel does not hate Jews. But, he certainly holds a disdain for a certain Jewish/Hollywood faction...probably the same faction that gave him his woes after producing the Passion.

I believe the same faction find it too convenient to use the word "hate" when circumstances are reciprocated when they go on their anti-Christian tirades. The only difference is their tirades are camouflaged in acts of rationale. It reminds me of an old saying from John Adams:

"Be not intimidated...nor suffer yourselves to be wheedled out of your liberties by any pretense of politeness, delicacy, or decency. These, as they are often used, are but three different names for hypocrisy, chicanery and cowardice."
