Mel Gibson Seeks Rehab: Actor Enters Unnamed Treatment Center
ABC News ^ | 7/31/06 | Buck Wolf

July 31, 2006 — Mel Gibson has reportedly sought rehab treatment, three days after he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

"He is in a program of recovery at this time," Gibson's spokesman, Alan Neirob, told Star magazine.

The 50-year-old Oscar-winning director and actor was arrested Friday in Los Angeles. Law enforcement officers said they clocked him doing 87 mph in a 45 mph zone. A breath test indicated Gibson's blood-alcohol level was 0.12 percent, sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said. In California a driver is legally intoxicated at 0.08 percent.

While it's not known where Gibson will be treated, Chris Printiss, the co-founder of celebrity treatment center Passages in Malibu, said he's aware of Gibson's plans.

"I understand he has gone to a treatment center," he told the magazine. "The center that I've heard he's checked himself into follows the Alcoholics Anonymous 12-step program. And I don't believe that will help him."

"He needs individual intense therapy by a team of people who know what they are looking for in causes in alcoholism."

Earlier on Monday, Malibu officials were defending the handling of Gibson's arrest amid allegations the department covered up anti-Semitic remarks Gibson reportedly made while he was in police custody.

The allegations of anti-Semitism stem from a leaked arrest report posted on the Web site TMZ.com quoting Gibson as saying, "The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world," and asking a deputy, "Are you a Jew?"

"This case is going to go to the district attorney," Whitmore told reporters. "In that case file will be his statement, will be our report, will be everything pertinent to his blood-alcohol level. We have done our job. We hope we've done it with not only professionalism and intelligence, but held to the highest standard. of legal and moral imperative."

Whitmore said county prosecutors will decide the next step after a review of the case, but that the Sheriff's Department was "convinced because of our investigation and because of his own self-illuminating statement that he will be convicted of driving under the influence."

"He died not very long after that and had the full clown funeral (a la MTM show), televised and everything, and I was very impressed with the quality and quantity of people who had been attracted into his life (nearly all in whiteface, no less, including dignitaries). Bottom line: It works if you work it, whether you need it or not!"

Love it! Neat story, nicely written. Thanks for the chuckle and the smile!

Amen to that.

There are as many reasons as there are people. We have to stop drinking, period.

Gibson's 'comments' were much more offensive than those of the Dixie Chicks when they stated they were embarrassed to be from Texas.

Gibson offends all who hold Judeo-Christian values.

God does tell us that we can be forgiven our sins. We need to repent first.

Can you come up with something different in how Mel Gibson has responded to his transgressions versus how the Natalie Maines and her partners responded to theirs?

I cannot accept an apology from an Anti-Semite, nor the the Dixie Chicks for their transgressions.

This is not going to set well with the "Passion" crowd.
There is not just one "Passion" crowd.
  1. Most will drop him like he was Jimmy Swaggart or Jim Bakker.
  2. Some will complain that he did nothing so bad.
  3. Others will complain that he doesn't say those things when he is sober.
  4. A few will take this as an opportunity to try to get a date with him and seduce him.
  5. Then there are those who will simply rally 'round the antiSemitic flag to take on the Jews ...

You're right on both counts. Glad to know that things are going well for you in Canada. It's a comfort to remember that there are people in recovery all over the world. There are millions of us, actually. How's that for outstanding news!

Then there are those who will:
6..rush to forgive him so quickly that it will make your head swoon.

Bingo! Mel is exactly the kind of person Satan loves to attack. He loves the Lord, and God will help him through this trial. My prayers are with him. He will be back, a better and stronger man. God uses troubles to draw us closer to Him, and His power conquers all.

I try to not place myself at a higher level of judging people than God. I do not believe stated repentance blindly. The actions must correspond with the words. I'll be in a wait and see mode with Mr. Gibson.

The Dixie Chicks believe they have done nothing wrong and continue to do damage. That is why they are on my list.

It IS very comforting. You don't get a pass at AA for anything you have done. I am known as the "crying one". LOL You chew it over until it oozes out your pores. And then you chew it over some more. We know what we have done and try and make amends and then find a way to live with it. In something resembling peace.

Thanks for your reply. It meant a lot.

This just in:

Mel Gibson launces Zel Zal missilles into Tel Aviv.

His words are obviously the real enemy.

I consider it perfectly acceptable to hate those who hate you. In fact, it's a survival trait.

Indeed, a survival instinct is a good thing to have, but like other instincts if taken to unreasonable extremes, hatred can become self-destructive. The potential danger of hatred is where one ends up becoming what one hates. Not that I haven't done the very thing to others in moments of anger, but is consigning Mel Gibson to eternal torment in the flames and outer darkness of hell for the despicable, insane comments he made under the influence of alcohol really enhancing your survival chances?

Cordially,

The Dixie Chicks expressed a political opinion, while misguided, it falls within the common political and social discourse in the United States.

Gibson, on the other hand expressed an opinion about a religion and culture which is not necessarily accepted by a large number of Americans.

Moreover, I have never given the Dixie Chicks my money but did give hard earned money to Gibson when I saw Passion.

Anti-semitism is repuslive and morally wrong.
If Gibson has revealed himself his dark side here- I have no problem calling it as it is.
I can separate the man from his art, however.
Somehow this reminds me of Mozart- a man whose personal side was nothing like his sublime music.
I see the "Passion" that way. I told the story of Jesus- not Mel Gibson. If the man who created it has an ugly, anti-semitic side it does not stain the film, IMO.
He IS publicly contrite. He IS ashamed( if only because he revealed himself), and he IS seeking help.
He DID NOT kill anyone with his words or his driving, thank God. He should receive just punishment under the law for his deeds, not his opinions- however ugly they may be.

His conclusion is also wrong- it is the MUSLIMS who are causing all the wars. Too bad he did not say that!

"Gibson's 'comments' were much more offensive than those of the Dixie Chicks when they stated they were embarrassed to be from Texas."

The Dixi Chicks while sober, dissed Buddy Holly.
That's ten times worse than Mel, while drunk, blaming Jews for all the wars.

For many people (and certainly "experienced" drinkers), 0.12 BAC isn't much, and is maybe a little tipsy. Most people reading this have probably driven at this level (and probably consider it to have been a bad idea, mind you.)
Beelzebubba

True words, bubba. Most of us have been there & done that.

Rte66:
There is a parabolic curve to any addiction cycle, including alcoholism.
To the alcoholic, the longer the term of the drinking, after the tolerance level is highest, then less and less is needed for impairment. To put it in the simplest form - drinking is fun, then it's fun with problems, then it's just problems.
He is closer to end-stage alcoholism than beginnings.

Can you back up your "end-stage" info about Gibson? -- Or is it as speculative as your opinions on the "addiction cycle"?

Rob, if the 0.12 reading is accurate, He did not have "alcoholic blackout syndrome".
