July 31, 2006 Mel Gibson has reportedly sought rehab treatment, three days after he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
"He is in a program of recovery at this time," Gibson's spokesman, Alan Neirob, told Star magazine.
The 50-year-old Oscar-winning director and actor was arrested Friday in Los Angeles. Law enforcement officers said they clocked him doing 87 mph in a 45 mph zone. A breath test indicated Gibson's blood-alcohol level was 0.12 percent, sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said. In California a driver is legally intoxicated at 0.08 percent.
While it's not known where Gibson will be treated, Chris Printiss, the co-founder of celebrity treatment center Passages in Malibu, said he's aware of Gibson's plans.
"I understand he has gone to a treatment center," he told the magazine. "The center that I've heard he's checked himself into follows the Alcoholics Anonymous 12-step program. And I don't believe that will help him."
"He needs individual intense therapy by a team of people who know what they are looking for in causes in alcoholism."
Earlier on Monday, Malibu officials were defending the handling of Gibson's arrest amid allegations the department covered up anti-Semitic remarks Gibson reportedly made while he was in police custody.
The allegations of anti-Semitism stem from a leaked arrest report posted on the Web site TMZ.com quoting Gibson as saying, "The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world," and asking a deputy, "Are you a Jew?"
"This case is going to go to the district attorney," Whitmore told reporters. "In that case file will be his statement, will be our report, will be everything pertinent to his blood-alcohol level. We have done our job. We hope we've done it with not only professionalism and intelligence, but held to the highest standard. of legal and moral imperative."
Whitmore said county prosecutors will decide the next step after a review of the case, but that the Sheriff's Department was "convinced because of our investigation and because of his own self-illuminating statement that he will be convicted of driving under the influence."
Mel's a traditional Catholic. He won't have any problems with the spirituality of the AA program. It will probably be easier for him than for a person who, up until he needed one, hasn't had a higher power to believe in.
I guess it's ok to hate Gentiles, then?
Cordially,
Well, that's my take on it, although some feel differently. Not being a Catholic I'm not in a position to say, although I do know a lot of Catholics get sober in AA.
Yes, us Christians certainly don't pray for those really in need of prayers. We only pray for perfect people, that way we know our prayers are always answered!extremely sarcastic!
Please elaborate.
Heh...cute, and even partially accurate/src.
It's ok to pray, just don't be so quick to forgive/src.
Don't be so quick to forgive???? Dude (or Dudette), you may have heard that love makes the world go 'round, but without forgiveness, there would be no love!
LOL! Bless you, my son!
Thanks!...really!
Gee, you'd think that with all his money he could afford a name-brand treatment center. Why go with a no-name?
Wow, some of these posts, including yours, are incredibly severe. I am not in any way excusing Mr. Gibson, but it is no surprise that he has dark places in his nature and upbringing as do all of mankind. Here's a passage from John that might need consideration in this discussion:
7 But when they continued asking him, he looked up and said to them, "He who is without sin among you, let him throw the first stone at her."
8 Again he stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground.
9 They, when they heard it, being convicted by their conscience, went out one by one, beginning from the oldest, even to the last. Jesus was left alone with the woman where she was, in the middle.
I also know from my own experience that when you are actively involved in what the Lord has called you to do, and particularly when the task is completed, you are at your most vulnerable.
From 1st Peter:
8 Be sober and self-controlled. Be watchful. Your adversary the devil, walks around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.
Mel Gibson made a massive, stupid error in judgement and he has a very wrong attitude toward the Jewish people (who are the apple of God's eye). He took a lot of flack from the more liberal Jewish organizations over the Passion of the Christ, Abe Foxman was one, which may have magnified the attitudes he was taught by his dad.
He has done both good and bad things in his life, as have you and I. We are all under condemnation for our thoughts and actions. If he repents(as he apparently did), he needs the same mercy and forgiveness that we need, from one another and from the Lord.
Blessings,
Actually, I think he might have an even larger obstacle. It has often been an observation that men, in particular, don't really get sober until their money runs out.
It's one reason the doctors' rehab programs last so much longer than the average in-patient's 30 days. JMHO
If I were for some reason to take a drink today, I'd wind up as drunk if not drunker than Mel Gibson, and if I were still alive, and someone were to just mention the word "Katrina" in my presence, they'd probably get a similar earful from me as what MG said about Jewish people.
The deputy who arrested him (Mee), who is Jewish, has been on TV several times today and says it was just drunk talk. He said he wishes he could lock himself in a room for a month and come back out and it would all be gone. I tend to agree.
I went to an early morning taping one time of a local children's TV program. The man who played the clown was a long-time entertainer around town, like 30-40 years or so.
Backstage, he pulled out a Hazelden meditation book like one I had, and began reading the day's prayer and meditation out loud to the crew. It was really nice and when I had some time with him alone after the shoot, I thanked him for it and nosed around a little to find out if he was an FOB(W).
Turned out he wasn't, but he loved the 12 Steps - said how great the world would be if everyone practiced them as an everyday thing. He had done it for years. I felt the same way and I was so glad I had gotten to know him a little bit.
He died not very long after that and had the full clown funeral (a la MTM show), televised and everything, and I was very impressed with the quality and quantity of people who had been attracted into his life (nearly all in whiteface, no less, including dignitaries). Bottom line: It works if you work it, whether you need it or not!
I consider it perfectly acceptible to hate those who hate you. In fact, it's a survival trait.

Obviously, you don't read..
"For me, I feel I was conned by Gibson in that I paid him money to see Passion of the Christ."
Conned? There are no words...to deal with that statement..

It was tragic for Mel Gibson to say what he did about Jewish people, but some good may come out of the entire incident if Gibson finds his way to sobriety. So the Deputy shouldn't be so hard on himself..
