NEW YORK Willie Nelson says the Dixie Chicks "got a raw deal" from a disapproving public following their criticism of President Bush.
"I think the fact that they were overseas and onstage had a little bit to do with it because you're speaking to other people about our business," the 73-year-old country crooner said in an interview in this week's Time magazine.
The trio caught harsh criticism after lead singer Natalie Maines told a London audience in 2003 that the group was "ashamed" Bush was from their home state of Texas.
Nelson said he was surprised his remarks about Bush a year earlier during an overseas news conference didn't incite a similar controversy.
"I said 'He's not from Texas and he ain't a cowboy, so let's stop trashin' Texans and cowboys.' It got a little chuckle, but I didn't get run out of the country," Nelson told the magazine.
Nelson recently launched his own XM Radio channel and published "The Tao of Willie," in which he offers his philosophy on subjects ranging from marijuana to war.
Me too. Her and Fogerty.
No more war for pot!
Sing Willie!
Just sing!
My money is being very quiet. It will not talk to them at all. It will not ever touch the palm of their hands...
Willie has something to sell so he wants to stir the "pot".
Pun intended! LOL~
Go buy their album Willie! In return I wont. Thats how freedom works!Isn't it grand? Now STFU!
I went to a Toby Kieth concert.......my twin sons bought me the ticket for xmas....they knew I loved his music.......he seemed like he didn't want to be there....and I had just learned he was an unapologetic Democrat....I told my sons it was a great concert....but I was disappointed........
Show business would be so great if you didn't have to keep the damn audience happy.
"Not really a good singer. A recognizable voice and guitar pattern yes."
Good songwriter, though.
If he is a dim (Toby), I am glad that I forgot his name! I despise dims almost as much as I do terrorists... as they are very close to being the same animal!
Thanks to all that took the time to inform me as to the author of the song!

If you want to run off at the mouth about the President, do it here, not in a foreign country.
Shut up Willie, no one listens to you anymore, you drown in your "Wiskey River". Has been.
Willie Nelson is a very good songwriter and a pretty good singer. That's about it.
Not even close. You should get his CD "Angry American" even if you don't like Country Music.
This is a picture taken of the audience at Keith's last concert....I think this will give you a good idea of who Toby Keith is and what his political views are.
That is good news. I was responding to another Freeper's statement about Keith's leanings.
I am happy to hear that bit of news! I have listened to Country all of my life, and spent some time in Nashville to boot. I listen to Jazz, Blues, Motown, Fusion, Rock, Folk, Classical, Swing, Ethnic (Irish, Cajun, Reggae etc).... I even like Sinatra!

I'll take your word for it. Maybe it was a joke, or maybe he was being political that one time. In my experience, I've never witnessed it, and I really enjoy his shows.
Maybe a year ago, I was channel surfing and came upon a recent live appearance by Willie on HD-Net. It was utterly pathetic. He TALKED, not sang, the songs. I couldn't believe people sat through it. It was incredibly bad. Anyone else seen it and know what I'm talking about?
